Will it look as amazing as the olympics did? I didn't have my TWC-HD box at the time of the olympics, but saw many clips through HDNet and was astounded. I'm hoping the answer is yes.

HDNet is doing the production, so it should look like their typical product: great.

The only caveat would be your local NBC DTV station. If they are multicasting, you may want to call them and ask if they can go with just the HDTV feed for the Derby.

If you ever saw the ABC demonstration tape of a few years ago, it showed the finish of a horse race. That race was, in fact, the 1998 Preakness Stakes. It should look as good as that race did.

No comments on 720p allowed! It really doesn't make that much difference.

If the weather holds up, it will be even better than the Olympics.

Other than ski jumping, all Olympics events had been indoors or night scenes. There hasn't been that much HDnet SPORTS coverage outdoors. Every HDnet outdoor coverage (Over BC, Bikini, MLB, Travel Europe, Hawaii,....) had been fantastic, so just imagine the shimmering color and close-up of the thoroughbreds!!

It's going to be a neat package recording on Hipix or AccessDTV, a nice 15 minute segment for the most exciting 2 minutes in sports.

Thanks for the thoughts all. Did anyone watch the HD Olympics on NBC *and* HDnet? I'd love thoughts from anyone who did and can comment on the quality on NBC. As for contacting the local affiliate here in NYC, I'll try, but it has 'large impenetrable corporate behemoth' written all over it...

I don't have directv here in NYC so can't watch on HDnet this weekend (not going to the weekend house where the directv setup is...) so it's NBC for me...

I saw the Olympics from both NBC (WDIV-DT in Detroit) & HDNet. WDIV-DT usually has both an HD channel & a SD channel, in that mode the Olympics looked much better (less pixelization) on HDNet. When WDIV shut off the SD channel and only used the HD channel, which they did almost immediately after being informed of the issue, they looked identical. So my bet is that if your station is only transmitting the HD channel, it should look as good as possible, e. g. just like HDNet.

As far as 5.1, sorry, I don't know. The good news is we'll all know soon enough.
