Today in LA I managed to take a look at HP's new plasmas. We (Microsoft) launched our new media initiatives (new version of Media Center, Media Player, etc.) there and HP was in our partner pavilion showing their (cool) media center PCs.

Anyway, they had one driving the new Plasmas (two sizes). First, let me say that the overall aesthetics of the set was far, far better than the pictures we saw a while back. The piano block finish was very well done and the speakers while not looking identical, did blend in rather well. Again, much better than they look in the picture. The metal stand likewise, had a nice contrast with the set. I would say the set (nearly?) holds its own against the Pioneer and definite step up against the industrial sets.

On the picture quality side, the MCE UI looked beautiful. But what was even more impressive, was the quality of analog SD TV. The over the air signal was very lousy to begin with, with ghosts and multipath distortions glore. So I expected to see a horrible image. To my surprise, the image looked very watchable, reminding of the old analog sets which is high praise indeed. Yes, you could see the flaws in the original signal but nothing added on top of it in the form of noise and digital artifacts. And I was standing just inches away from the set. Now, I did not spend hours in front of it but for the few minutes that we looked at the few channels, I thought the quality was most impressive for poor quality OTA NSTC.

I asked them to show us HD content and he played one of our WMV-HD Imax movies. Unfortunately, I only got a few seconds of this before being interrupted. But in the brief moments, I did not notice any contouring or video noise. The picture looked a bit soft but again, I did not have enough time to scrutinize it. The interruption btw, was my boss, Bill Gates being followed by a camera crew, wanting to check out the new media center (with a great swappable hard disk!) :).

Please note that this is not a proper review of any sort. Just wanted to give some quick impressions on this new set since I suspect few people have seen it. And most of us dismissed this as a lousy attempt by HP to build good product so I wanted to set the record straight as much as I can.

Now back to discussing Panny 7U units :).

Very good to hear. Perhaps HP has truly added some value. Would be very nice if true.

I would not be surprised if HP is just rebadging another brand, much like Gateway.

I've seen various HP LCD displays, and they are pretty good. If they can bring that quality to plasma displays at a decent price, it wouldn't be anything to sneeze at.

I have one of their DeskJets and I'm very happy with it.

More info on the PL-4245N:

This is an HD (not ED) plasma that scales up to 1080i. It does not support HDMI or CableCARD.

It has dual NTSC tuners (capable of PIP/POP), but not PBP. An external tuner is required for HDTV. Amazingly, no DVI or D-sub input is included.

Dual YPbPR inputs are available.

A stand is included.

The speakers are detachable.

I would think this would be available from the usual suspects (Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples, etc.).

Coming from the computer side, I'd have to say that HP customer service has been below average. It propably would be better if one can deal with LG if something goes wrong.

Re the observation “Coming from the computer side, I'd have to say that HP customer service has been below averageâ€, remember that HP historically hasn’t been just computers and printers – many of us still have trusty old HP 12c calculators from our college years. Re these new HP-branded plasmas, the interesting specs include 3000:1 contrast, DVI-HDCP input (rather than HDMI), and Faroudja DCDi video processing … might be interesting to see how these 42-inch HP plasmas compare to the new Zenith and LG plasmas much-discussed in some other threads. I just wish more vendors would introduce quality 50-inch+ plasmas with true-HD 1366 x 768 resolutions, such that there’s more price competition (and more variety, beyond the ubiquitous Panny/Pioneer gear) in that size class.

I saw the HP 42" Plasma at MicroCenter yesterday, running off of an HP Digital Entertainment Center computer (horizontal HTPC format-NICE!).

I just want to clarify that the HP Plasma does have a DVI connector and a D-sub connector. According to the information label, it does support HDMI too.

Enjoy,

I can pick up one of these through employee purchase... a very reasonable price, but I want to wall mount it, but can't find a mount that specifically states it supports this monitor. Any idea of a wall mount that will?

I just want a no frills wall mount, something that will support the unit.

Thanks,

Jeff

Comparing the specs of the HP HD42inch versus Panny, Samsung, etc - I am hard pressed to differentiate - I would appreciate any input as to what I might be missing or overlooking.

There is a significant cost difference, and thus, if there is not much other difference, I would be very much interested in the HP.

Just remember to have your old patches backed up in the likely event some patches from the current patch bundle need to be backed out.
