HR10 woes

I have an HR10-250 and a Zenith plasma 60" tv. For the second time in 6 months, both units have lost their video boards simultaniosly. I use a good surge protector. There have been no outside influences such as lightning, no other electronics in the house have been affected. The only symptom I can provide is that I would get a black screen but the cooling fans and green "on" lght worked I had to unplug the tv for 30 seconds and then it would restart. As happened the first time, it took about 6months of this before blowing, though the two may or may not be related. The reciever works perfectly until it quits Directv, nor my local sources have been able to come up with a solution. The guess was a voltage surge. I scoped the power lines for 5 days and saw nothing. Is it possible for one of the units to be frying the other? Tivo box doesn't bother me, it's under protection plan, Tv is out of pocket. Please help!

I would look at the power outlet. Call a good electrician and have a "dedicated" circuit aka line installed. Sounds like a line overload to me.

There is absolutely no reason that these two units would be interfering with each other electronically.

I agree you should check the house wiring, looking for bad grounds, reversed wall sockets etc. I'd also make sure the dish and antenna cabling is properly grounded.

However, if I'm interpreting your post correctly -- failure of video boards in both devices requiring replacement, and several other failures requiring a reboot of your tv -- then I'd be looking at two other possible causes: either fast powerline transients, or ESD.

Possible solutions for transients would be better surge protector, ferrite cores on powercords and video cable. They are typically sub-microsecond spikes that originate outside your home, and can be seen with a fast digital scope with single-shot triggering.

ESD is electrostatic discharge. Sub-nanosecond spikes. Big problem in dry climates. It's the reason for all the warnings when handling computer devices like memory, cpu's etc. Well designed equipment is not very susceptible to ESD, but not all equipment is well designed. ESD problems are not easily solved. Too fast for surge protectors and cores. It's hard to test for. If you frequently feel a shock when touching a doorknob then it's a good candidate.
