HR21 and Ethernet

I am about to get an HR21 and had a question about the ethernet port on it. What is it used for? Does it take the place of the phone line?

Yes you can use it instead of phone line. It will also be used for DoD.
Do most people even have their HR21 connected to the phone line? Or do you all just leave it not connected?

It's OK to leave it unconnected.
So basically if most people are leaving their phone line unconnected, then they are leaving their ethernet unconnected as well?
I have a slightly different understanding of this (based on my HR20's)

-Phone line is only necessary if you want to order Pay per View using the remote: otherwise no need to connect it

-Ethernet is used for VOD: it does not replace the phone line to buy PPV using the remote: otherwise no need to connect it

- HR20's will hang up during booting unless the Ethernet connection is unplugged: plug it in after the reboot is complete

No need to have phone line hooked up for PPV anymore.

Ethernet is used for VOD and PPV ordering.

My HR20's or HR21 do not hung during boot up with ethernet pluged in. If it does that means your DVR is broken or something is wrong with the ethernet connection.

I suggest for anybody with questions about HR20/21 to visit dbstalk forum.

This is 100% correct. I have the HR21, not the HR20, but it definitely doesn't hang with the ethernet connected. In fact, I plugged it in before I even powered up for the first time and the unit was perfectly happy with it.

I've also heard from multiple sources the phone line isn't needed if you have the ethernet hooked up.
Is there any way to have a HR21 and also use OTA HD channels? I have been told that the HR20 (which I believe has an OTA tuner) are hard to impossible to find. Also one other question, I spoke with a DirecTV installer today who told me that by 2009, all OTA HD channels will not work. Any truth to this?

In couple of months there will be add on OTA tuner AM21 for HR21. It will be priced at $59.
Thanks for the info: I picked up an HR21 at Costco ($169.00) today

Seems a bit better than my HR20's (less issues as described above)

One question: there used to be a menu option to hide the SD channel duplicates: is this not on the HR21 software yet?

Thanks
