Dear All, Nick,

I have - following months of online research and carefully reading up on this forum - finally started building my very first HT and the selected projector would now be the HS51 (initially had my mind set on the HS20).

For building my DIY screen, I have the choice of the following :

1.> bright white screen cloth, gain 1.2, backside black coated

2.> off-white screen cloth, gain 1.125, backside grey coated, listed as 'High Contrast'

With the announced blacklevel quality of the HS51, which screen colour would you choose ? Pictures of the materials are attached.

It may still be too early to give a definitive answer on this issue, but maybe someone has experience with the HS20, or can give me a general guideline? I would prefer building the screen before the projector arrives but maybe it is better to wait.

Hope this question fits into the discussion, forgive me if not,

- this is actually my very first (newbie) posting

Wouldn't this depend on how/if you plan to calibrate the unit and also tune the BL to your liking?

Yes absolutely, calibration and ambient light control will be of major impact.

I guess I would like to find out if there are people who own for example an HS20 (which also claims the 'Cinema Black Pro' technology) and experienced improved blacks by choosing off-white or even grey screens.

And also, if you would advise waiting with the screen, or not...

I'm just trying to learn from user's experiences, and in this case it's a difficult one because the HS51 has not yet been reviewed and we are litterally 'in the dark' on how it will perform in real life.. ,-(

I think it also depends upon how big of a screen you're going to have. For example, if your screen is 90" diagonal a grey screen might improve blacks and still maintain good color. If you're using a 126" screen, however, I think you'd want a bright white screen to give the colors some more punch.

David,

As you might have seen to an other thread related to HS51, i ahve seen the pj last night. What i did not mention is that i have not only seen him in action with the high contrast screen from Projecta (110 inch wide), but also with the matte white version of the same screen.

From what i have noticed, there is a sustantial improvement in favor of the high contrast type, although it has gain of 1 (according to the specs).

The HS 50 is bright enough even in auto iris setting so you do not have to worry about brightness.

I will, for sure, continue to use my own High contrast screen that i currently use for my Vpl 12HT with a CC30R filter installed.

Dear Stew, and Nick,

First of all, thank you for your reply ! I have just calculated the exact dimensions and it would be 106" (I can go up to 124" but prefer sharpness above size so the middle ground seems best).

I did not know that the impact would be different depending on screen size, so thank you for informing me there Stew !

The HS20 was a 1200ANSI projector, the HS51 is a 800ANSI one, and a grey screen improves blacks but also tones down all the other colours. So I had trouble making an idea of how much the impact of a coloured screen would be.

Nick >> this is very helpful indeed ! In fact, it's pretty much exactly what I needed to know. If I understand well, the HS51 blacks will still benefit from a High Contrast screen, and has enough brightness output not to tone down the other colours on a darker screen.

So I guess I would go for the HC cloth, gain 1.125

I love this Forum ,-)
