Oh My God!!!

Where in hell has the rainbow gone to? Where have the ugly gray bars gone to?

For six long years I've been waiting to see this.

It's like my whole home theater life has just flashed in front of my eyes.

I remember the W400q. I remember the nView. I remember the Davis. I remember the Sharps. I remember all the earlier NEC's and the Infocuses. I remember the three D-ILA's. I remember how I could never watch the movie because there was always some pq distraction of one sort or another. And I remember how I always went back to the dinosuars and started fighting the convergence and the geometry and focus all over again.

Oh My God!!! That's all over with now.

p.s. My HT-1000 arrived a day earlier than expected. I've been watching DVD for about 30 minutes. I'm feeding it Radeon and Theater Tek. All I've done so for is get it to display the picture with whatever settings it had when Terry packed it up. All I know now is it's in econ mode and I've switched the iris in and out and both positions look equally good.

Bob,

I have used the same setup you're using (with Radeon 9700, DVI and TheaterTek 1.5) both in the single test and the shoot out that is now online.

These are the settings I found:

NEC HT1000

Reference setting = Movie

Gamma correction = Natural

Red = -16

Green = 6

Blue = 10

Yellow = 2

Magenta = -16

Cyan = 5

Color gain = 0

Color temperature = 6500?K

White balance = N.A.

Picture options: N.A.

They delivered a very good picture, as you can see in the measure section.

Feel free to try them and tell if they fit in your system!

Jan,

After experimenting with so many different kinds of gimmicky screen material I finally discovered that a plain old matte white 1.3 gain screen is what I like the best. And that's the case whether I'm using CRT, D-ILA or DLP.

I think what's more difficult to decide is which is the best screen size/viewing distance for this projector. I know what viewing distance/screen size works for me (to minimize screendoor, dithering and rainbow). But others are happy with their HT1000's while making a larger image. And I'm going to stop trying to convince them different. If they're happy, I'm happy.

Andrea,

Thanks. I'm anxious to start tweaking (if I can stop watching movies long enough). :)

Sergio,

Before I got to see it work I asked another forum member if he thought it was worth $2500 more than the X1.

It is. :)

I found a very pleasant image at 76" width with a viewing distance at around 13 ft. No DMD structure, great 3D: maybe at these dimensions, spending more it's a matter of subjective will to... pick up the checkbook!

Believe me, ckolchak, I'm choking when I say it and it's hard to get the words out, but (cough) I agree (cough).

p.s. now I've got to stop playing and get to work and earn some money. I just realized that along with my new title (The Sultan of Spendthrift) there's a big credit card bill going to be coming in any day now. :D

I've only seen the DPX-1000, Noah.

Pixel count notwithstanding, it's comparable to what I remember the Yamaha being except the HT1000 appears to look better on the low end.

So as long as XGA is an option (and I know it's not for everyone) then a choice between those two would be a no brainer for me.

This time let me disagree a little bit, Bob...

You can see why on the shoot out on www.htprojectors.com, but I think the Yamaha is definitely better... it's really a warship, IMHO!

Ok I've seen a ton of HD2's.

Seleco

Marantz

Sharp

Infocus

Runco

Here's my thoughts, out of all the above I thought the Marantz looked the best and the HT1000 produces a similair image.

I demoed the Marantz and they used Fast & Furious as the demo DVD. The colors of the cars and close up shots of the drivers were vivid and sharp. When I first got the HT1000 I popped on the same Noxfest scene and the image was identical to what I saw with the Marantz.

I viewed at home at 13' back from a 7.5 wide screen and could only see a very crisp high resolution. So the extra pixels of the Marantz didn't come into play. Colors and blacks seemed about the same.

Pretty amazing to get this level of picture for $4,000. The guys next door didn't want to budge on the $13,000 retail for the Marantz.

You should see the Two Towers which is mainly a gray/black movie. The HT1000 excells with this movie.

this kind of reasoning is used in the under $5K fourm quite a bit.

for some people $3.5K is just as impossible a figure to swing as a $13K for you and me, and it is usually bolstered with "there is just no way the _____ can be 3 and 1/2 times better than _____".

after a certain threshold ($6K now, maybe?) the law of diminishing returns seriously kicks in and you pay greatly for that extra 5...4...3...2% of performance.

Andrea,

In all fairness I don't know if the Yamaha had been set up properly. It was in a local A/V boutique that I don't really frequent and don't know the people or how competent they are.

I watched the darker scenes in Pearl Harbor and the shadow detail was not much better than my X1. So I have to think something must have been amiss.

That Yamaha is the only HD2 demo that's been available to me. I hope to be able to get to see some more.
