In my current setup I'm running 4 Polk RT55s for front mains and rear surrounds. The Polks don't handle bass frequencies (less than ~ 150 Hz) well at loud volume levels. My idea is to add four custom built woofer cabinets to be used as speaker stands for the 55s. The cabinets will house two 8" woofers. I need advice with how to handle the crossover. Ideally, I would like to send the full range signal for each discrete channel to each speaker (i.e. I don't want front or LFE bass sent to the rear speakers).
How do I set this up? Should I make the enclosures passive, install a crossover inside and then run speaker wire out of the enclosure to the satellite above? How would I setup such a system if the enclosure includes a sub amp (with x-over bypass)? Thanx for any input. (Yes, you can tell me that I'm wacky for pondering such a setup.)
