I'm a newbie to hi-fi, home theater, and sacd/dvd-a, but have found myself spending an exhoribant amount of dough, as compared to my income, on this stuff. I see the light at the end of the tunnel after another PLANNED 1k investment (I still manage my finances within reason...) Enough with the rambling, here is my question:

1) What's your current setup?

2) Estimated cost?

3) Age?

4) You fix or reason for getting into this hobby?

1) Pending

2) Pending, I'll post within a week, I promise.

3) 24

4) I live in NYC. The opera and jazz clubs are amazing. I want that MUSIC in my apartment. BTW, I highly recommend Smalls if you like good jazz in a living room atmosphere.

At 24, single with no kids, working a pseudo non-profit job before some type of grad school is *unlikely*, based on my own assumptions, a close match to the average demographics on this forum.

Well, I'm certainly no newbie to either hi-fi or HT. I started out installing car stereo back in the days of 8-tracks, and eventually graduated to CDs, passing through cassettes along the way. Even back in the days of 6x9 Tri-axials on the back deck, I was a firm believer in front soundstage.

My best car system had a Sanyo CD-tuner head unit, an Alpine 4-band active crossover, a 35w/ch amp on ribbon tweeters (dash), 50w/ch amp on Pyle closed-back mids (dash), 60w/ch on Cerwin-Vega 6.5" mid-woofers (front doors), and 130 watts mono on a 12" sub-in-a-box (sealed, of course, in the rear). Oh, and no rear speakers.

My first serious home stereo system had a Dual 1229 turntable with a Shure V-15 type III cartridge, Dynaco PAT-4 preamp and FM-5 tuner (kits), a pair of Southwest Technical Products' Universal Tiger amps (kits), Rectilinear III speakers, and of course, Koss Pro-4AA headphones. (Anyone feeling old yet?)

Later on, my home theater addiction began with an RCA VLT-601 hi-fi vcr, the cable company's tuner (and movie channels were simulcast on stereo FM), a Pioneer VSX-5000 receiver, a pair of EPI 100 front speakers, a pair of Minimus 7 rears, and a BSR passive subwoofer. The center speaker was an option back then.

Now:

1) See 'my system' below.

2) I'd have to add it all up, but I will say that it would cost double what I paid to duplicate it.

3) Assuming you mean me, and not the equipment, a very young 48 next month.

4) I'd have to call it natural progression.

At 47, divorced with (full custody of) my 15-yr-old son, own my own electrical contracting business (HT, HA, etc.), based on my own assumptions, I'd bet that I'm a closer match to the average demographics on this forum than you'd think.

Welcome aboard!

Here ya go:

1. Currently, I have NHT T5's for my fronts, an M5 center, NHT CS 8.3 in ceilings for rear surrounds. My receiver is still up in the air. I'm torn between a Pioneer Elite 43tx, 45tx, and a Marantz SR7300. Also, have a Pioneer Elite DV-45A DVD/SACD/DVD-A/MP3/etc. player, and a Toshiba 50" widescreen.

2. The speakers altogether ran $3500, est. cost for receiver approx. $1000, cables at about $300 so far. Elite 45A at $480. Toshiba - free compliments of my Dad. He discovered plasma TV's, and replaced one of his big screens in the basement with a Panasonic plasma. I fell into thisone.

3. Age=27. I'm married, but still love my toys, and my wife is realizing that she is going to have a hard time stopping me. Live in St. Louis, MO, but travel extensively as a managament consultant.

4. My fix...always wanted a home system that kicked rear end, and finally broke down and did it (before kids). Love to listen to all types of music, and the wife and I love our Blockbuster nights.

1) Onyko 700, Denon 1600, Elite 53", BA speakers and VR center, and Mirage 12" Sub. I would like to add the leather sectional and captains chair and the nice $3.5 hardwood entertainment center. It is all part of HT experience. Future mods within the next month are new speakers & new sub; might go with Ascend Acoustics and a SVS or HSU VTF-3.

2)w/o furniture; about $7500. Add the couches and center about $14000.

3)Age 28, married with two younguns. Wife stays at home and I have one full time and a couple part time jobs. Native to Boston, but live in Bermuda for the part five years.

4)my home is my sanctuary. I like to retreat to the healthy wellness of my HT when I am not working, which is most of the time. Also, it attracts my friends to come over so I never have to worry about baby sitters or leaving the wife at home (well, too much!) I can also pass out at home too so no more unidentified dings on my bumper.

I also love, and hate, the tweeking associated with HT. My wife hollwered down to me to close the windows Saturday night because of the rain...it wasn't raining.....at least outside!! Gotta love that, just wait until the new sub comes!!!!
