I have a small loft in which I have my TV, computer, and couch. It's not an idea HT by any means. But I have some $$, and want to get something going. The room is maybe 12x12 with the couch against one wall.

I'm looking at the Denon 5803, but not sure about the speakers. Yes, I know the 5803 is way overkill for my current needs. But I want something that has component HDTV switching so it will work for years to come. I'm also a computer geek, and like lots of buttons and knobs.

But I'm not sure what speakers to use. They need to be small and mount on the wall. The couch is right against the wall, so I know putting speakers back there will result in less than stellar sound. But it's the only room in the house that I can use. When I get a bigger house I can expand.

I'd be willing to pay $2000 for a good 6.1 or 7.1 speaker setup. What would anyone recommend for this small space?

Here's my half-educated opinion on the matter...no wait, this is the internet, so that makes me an expert!

My HT/TV room is about 11x13 (I forget). I put these picks up as a visual aid when asking for opinions on what to do with the room.

I currently have a Yamaha HTR-5150 receiver (the lowest end model that had both DD and DTS, as of three years ago), a JBL PB10 powered sub, a low-end Polk center, and four $150-$200/pr speakers. The TV's a Toshiba 56H80. I enjoy this setup immensely!

Being a gadget freak (and other forms of geek), I've got an upgrade plan.

Source: I think I'm going with an Outlaw 950/770 combo. I plan to use 5.1 for the HT, and use the other two channels of amplification for a second zone in the room on the other side of the wall. This is more than I need for the room, so I may not be the best example. If you go with a flagship receiver, check on upgradability. It's not something you want to value over sound quality, but if you plan on keeping the system for a long time, it would be nice to be able to satisfy the itch for the latest formats without major expenditure.

Speakers: I'm going with the Diva 4.1/C3/2.1 package. The consensus seemed to be that 6.1s would be too much for the room and that the R3s would not be as suitable as the 2.1s with my seating position so close to the back wall. I think some people are using 2.1s as mains, mounting them on stands. If front towers aren't in your future, perhaps wall mounted 2.1 mains can be. There are other brands, though. A search of the forum would probably turn up the brands and model numbers.

Sub: I was thinking about the SVS CS+ 16-46 with a Samson 1000 amp, but since I'm not pulling the trigger until June/July, I will probably go with the SVS PC+ 16-46, which should be out around that time. I've also heard good things about the Hsu VTF-3 if you prefer a cube over a cylinder (well, I guess you could have a "which sounds best" preference too, if you want to be picky). In any case, I received feedback from SVS that a PCi would take care of a room that size without a problem, but I'd rather have too much than just enough.

Again, since I haven't made the upgrade yet, this is more of a "this is what I'm going to do," than a recommendation. If I don't have the gear yet, I can't recommend.

My room is about 13"11, so I have limited space, yet am able to fit a nice system in there.

I have B&W DM603-S2's for front and rear, a B&W CC3 for center, and a 12" Sony sub. It may sound like too much for a small room, but it works for me, plus once I move, it will fit a larger room.

If that's too much for you, a DM601-S3 or 602/602.5 S3 would work for front/rear, and still give a great sound. They are normally bookshelf/stand mount speakers, but you can mount them on a wall bracket.
