Can you just mount them on a screw or do you need to use wall mounts so they can be aimed upward toward the ceiling?

I think you can do either. I used cheapo mounts ($15 a pair) that I had to modify a bit. I pointed mine down towards the listening area. If you mount them with a screw, they'll shoot out above, but you'll probably still hear whatever comes out.

I mounted a pair of the surround speakers with using a screw / wall anchor and it was just fine.
