I’m about ready to order my surround sound system but have a few questions first. I am 95% set on HTD level two bookshelf front/center speakers and either the 6.5” or 8” in-wall rears. I’m not set on an amp but strongly considering the Sony STR DN840 after reading several reviews including CNET.

My problem is now a sub. I was planning on the BIC F12 as it seems to be a pretty good bang for the buck but after consideration I really don’t know where to place a huge sub box that it wouldn’t bother me. I see that HTD has in-wall subs that get really good reviews, am I going to be disappointed going with something like this for my decently large room? Maybe the rear 8” over the 6.5” speakers will help with a little bass? Could I add a second built in sub at a later point ? Were would you put the sub in the rear wall behind the sofa or on the wall perpendicular to the TV near the front of the room? Due to several built in bookshelfs etc it cannot go on the front wall.

HTD: in wall sub

BIC F12:

Room layout, most likely will have the section pulled several feet from the wall.

IMO, yes.

IMO, no. You're most likely going to be crossing over your speaker at 80Hz or higher, so although the larger speakers might offer more mid-bass or mid-range, they won't do much for bass.

1. How big is your room (l x w x h; sealed or open to other spaces)?

2. What's your budget for a sub?

3. How big a sub would you be comfortable with?

4. Would dual smaller subs (say, Dayton SUB-1200s or SVS SB-1000s) work for you?

The drawing above in excel represents 1 ft for each block, the main TV are will be about 13ft wide over to the stairs(which is open into the bar area) and about 17ft from the TV to the back of the room. Ceilings are a little under 9ft.

I was hoping to stay in the $200-$300 range. I've read that you cannot get a decent sub under $500 but I'm not an audiophile and thought something like the well reviewed BIC i posted above might at least do a decent job. If I really need to spend $500+ I'm okay but redoing this entire basement has cost a good chunk!!

It hard to say as the basement is still a work in progress and we haven't picked furniture yet, I'm not sure what looks "reasonable" without people saying wow what is that huge black box doing sitting there?

Possibly could do this, will it matter a great deal where they are placed? I probably wouldn't drop $1,000 on two SVS's at least right now, possibly get one and add a second later? Would two of the above in wall subs still not give me decent bass?

BTW, this sub will be 90% movies, 10% music if that makes a difference.
