HTIB under 400

I saw previous posts with a similar question. I am looking for the best system available for HDTV i have setup. I am considering the Sony HT-DDW700 which is an 800 watt system from best buy for $180 and the Athena micra 6 from best buy for $299. Previously i have read that the athena system has been onsale and was selling for around $240. Wondering if its still worth it at the $ 300 dollar price level. Also, are there other systems out there that are better for the same amount of money. I am on a budget but want a decent system for my tv for movies. I guess anything is better than the TV speakers, but i dont wanna throw away money on just anything. Any recommendations for a good 5.1 system, with a nice bass and mid levels. I want the best for my money...like who doesnt though.

For $300 there is nothing can can touch it. 5 speakers and sub included and even at $300 is still less than places have it online at $240 it was a steal. It's $350+ at most places. Now after saying that take the system for what it is, a satellite system with a small powered subwoofer. It will shine in smaller rooms and litterally blow away anything htib has to offer as far as speakers and a sub.
What about the Onkyo S780 system from acessories 4 less. Its advertised on there for $331. And im willing to spend under $50 more for something surperior. I know it is refurbished, but is that necessarily bad??? I know that that means it has been tested and approved and that it works alright and that it has a 1 year manufacturer warranty, where as non-refurb, its kind of a gamble maybe. Thoughts? Is the Onkyo system a good system that has room for upgradeability, to maybe a mid level system in the future? Thoughts?
I just got the Sony HT-7000DH from Circuit City online for $415.00. That is slightly above your range so maybe it doesn't work but it looks like a very nice HTIB. Still working to get mine set-up but I'm a HT newb so I think it's me, not the system.
I want to get the Athena speaker package but the price here in Canada is insane. Athena Point 5 cost CAD$900 and Anthena Micra 6 with a low end Yamaha receiver (5920 I think) costs $1000 ! This is from Futureshop.

Wonder if there are any cheaper source for speakers in Canada ?

Thanks

Thanks for your tip. I will try to bid on this. Why the price between canada and US is so huge. These speakers are sold for US$200 on Ebay but listed as almost around US$820 in Futureshop !

Edit: Just found that the one sold in Futureshop include a 12" Athena subwoofer, which is not inlcuded in the usual point 5 package. But still the price difference is quite big.
Sony's HTIB setups are crap, IMO.

I would go with Yamaha or Onkyo, but if you go Onkyo, get the 780s or 580s. Also, get them refurbished...

Don't get the 790s or 590s because both have problems.

Dunno you'll have to talk to our goverment officials about that one lol. It is suprising though taking in cosideration that Athena is based in Canada. Looks like it would be the other way around.

For reference though, the Athena Point5 package when it was available retail sold for $199 + around 35 shpping. The Athena AS-P4000 10" is just

I'm also looking at the S780 or S790. Anyone know what the differences are? Do both receivers offer component switching?

agreed. sony makes nice televisions, but i've never been even remotely impressed with any of their audio offerings.

its repeated here ad nauseum, but its the truth: if you must go HTIB, go onkyo or yamaha, there are really no other solutions for

Yeah, and even their television quality is slipping, IMO. I had issues with a new Sony tube, so I got a refund and went with a Samsung DLP. Best decision I made for a TV.
I have the Onkyo HT-S770. The system is pretty good for what you pay for. The only drawback I see is the thin speaker wires and the fact that it can overheat in a partially enclosed cabinet.
What happens when it overheats? Does it turn itself off?
