Is there any sound card out there that would enable me to use my HTPC as a audio receiver/amp? Obviously it needs to have output connections to the speakers...

Is it a good idea to do it this way?

well none of those are powered so you wouldn't be able to use them as an "amp" per say, nor can you really use them as a reciever since i don't think you can switch inputs on the fly with a remote control.

If you buy powered speakers and hook them up to one of those cards you might have a solution. Depending on your home theater needs you can buy anything from a set of logitech Z-680 5.1 speakers, which have a built in reciever/proccesor that can decode dolby digital and dts and switch between analog and two digitinal inputs with a remote control..

or you can go as high end as 5 M&K S-150P and hook them straight up to the sound card, i have the non powered version and they are great.
