I have a asus dvd-e608 drive in my htpc currently running Win98. I want to upgrade to Windows XP but the drive wont work in XP.

This drive is regionfree by default but I think the driver is bad in windows 2000/xp. I cant play regioncoded dvds (only region 0) in 2000/xp but without any problems play ALL in win98. I´ve tried programs like dvd region killer but no success.

I´ve noticed that in the properties for the drive in 2000/xp, there is a topic called dvd region and that it is 1 change remaining (it always says that it´s 1 change remaining even if I change region). In win98 there is no region info, and it seems like the win98 drivers understands that this drive is regionfree.

The error I get in PowerDVD in 2000/xp is 8090000D An unexpected copy protection error has occurred. Unable to play disc.

The driver is some Microsoft default using cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys nad storprop.dll.

Do anyone know about some other drivers or may it work with drivers for an other bran/model.

Thanks.

It´s NOT region hacked. All E608 are regionfree.

Are you sure its the same drive we are talking about and do you use Windows XP?

Oh I didn't realize it was region-free OOB. I saw a firmware upgrade on The Firmware Page, but never tried it out. Looking back, it says it just fixed read errors.

I just looked up the drive in Device manager and it is reported as ASUS DVD-ROM E608. I'm running Win XP Pro and I use it quite regularily for both DVDs and CDROMs.

If you look in Properties->Driver->Driver Details for your drive, what files do you find in that list?
