I'm planning to start putting together my HTPC to drive my BARCO 1208 CRT projector.

I'll be running remothe control software on my 640 x 480 vga touch screen monitor as well as a main output to run the projector. To do this I'll use two video cards, one being a basic PCI VGA card and the other a Radeon.

Now that Radeon are fixing the gamma problem on the 8500 series it's viable choose that for my video card or at least one of them.

I'll also be including a serial port card to control my AV switcher, projector and sound system via their serial ports.

My current hardware line up is as follow , please feel free to comment on my choices :-

ASUS A7V333 motherboard with 100 MHz network, 256 DDR ram, 2 gig AMD processor

Radeon 8500 all in wonder video card for CRT

generic VGA video card fro touchscreen monitor

M-Audio 2496 with optical out

Lite on DVD drive

Infrared KBD/mouse

Maxtor or equivalent quiet/ fast 60 gig HDD

Not buying a DVD burner yet as the new 27 gig R/W blue laser units are being released in Australia by the end of the year.

I think that's all I need, it wont be a games machine ever so I need not consider 3D much and it will network to the firewall PC that has a modem.

Feel free to comment or suggest changes.

thanks all :)))

When I read the FAQ it seemed consensus was Intel Chipset
ASUS P4B266
Soyo SY-P4i Fire Dragon

Both use the Intel 845 chipset

Both are Loaded boards with GOOD support

U say it won't be a GAMES machine... so Y the VIA/AMD?

Intel P4 1.6a/1.8a NorthWood .13 micron CPUs run faster/cooler

ATI7500AIW uses same DVD playback chip as 8500 but costs less $$

People seem to want the 8500 for the faster GAME playback

Both Boards above come with CMI8738 5.1 S/PDIF i/o header

If you are only going to decode in UR receiver.... Y buy the Maudio 2496?

Segate 80gig BARRACUDA IV is the only to go... u CAN'T hear it!

Heard good things about Lite-On

Bot the Toshiba about a 1 second LAYER CHANGE and has only stuck a couple of times..so far

Bot the AirBoard/Mouse IR but would get Radio Frequency so not have to Point it

Running W2K/SP2 like the WinDVD 3.1 player w/remote myself

What Remote Software do you use?

Which Touch Screen do U have?

Trying to get two displays working in the HTPC can lead to problems. If you are only using the second monitor to control stuff and don't plan on showing any video, I'd say that probably won't be too bad.

Otherwise, I'd suggest going with the Fujitsu Point 510 like a lot of people here did.

Why not? If cost is an issue, the AMD will give a better bang for the buck. Even if cost is not an issue, why spend more money than necessary?

I'll give you cooler, but definitely not faster.

Sounds reasonable. I am probably going to go for the same card.

When I said

I was comparing the older P4 Williamette series .18 micron w/256kb L2 cache

AMD makes WonderFul CPUs

But when I read the Complaints about Not Working Right

here in HTPC section, I note most are NON-Intel

I really LOVE obsidience
