Using a Dell 500mhz system with 512 meg ram. Using it to run a ATI 8500 video card to play dvd's on a sony 1271 crt projector. I'm using windows 98, but also have copies of windows 2000 and windows xp professional. Not having any problems with windows 98 but wondering if it would be better to run windows 2000 or windows xp professional. Any input appreciated.

For HTPC use, there is little real performance or quality bonus with 2000/XP.

There may even be compatibility issues with software/drivers that are not of concern under 98, eg. hardware accel with ATI and TT player.

The one real benefit to 2000/XP is superior stability to 98. I felt it necessary to upgrade to XP as I could not get my 98 system to run solid.

I would say hold off, unless you are experiencing stability issues with 98.
