Can an HTPC match $800 DVD players like the Pioneer Elite DV-47A in music and video qualiity? I keep reading how HTPC provides great DVD playback but I'm not sure how great?

Also, how would you play SACD on a HTPC?

I assume that if I want to watch "cable" HDTV channels like HBO (& esp. ESPN in '03) I will need to buy a SAT HDTV set-top-box which is unfortunate because the ~$600 savings from buying a SAT STB would help justify a $800 HDTV Tuner card.

Depends on your display device. The DVD player does no scaling, so if your display is of a higher native resolution and has a less than stellar internal scaler, the HTPC would end up looking nicer.

I haven't read of any solutions to play SACD on a PC, just DVD-Audio.

The need to purchase a STB depends on how your cable company modulats HDTV (8VSB or QAM.) For satellite HDTV, you definitely would need it though.
