Hey guys... Just found this forum tonight and everyone seems to know their stuff so I'm gonna ask a big question... My wife and i are making this decision tomorrow morning so let me know what you think...

Should we get...

Sony Bravia KDL-40xbr7 - 1279

OR

Samsung LN-B630 - 999

Both are in our price range... Let me know what you think....

Hmmm, I'd say the Samsung. But instead of the XBR7 option, can you consider the V5100 or possibly the W5100 for around the same price range? Those Sony televisions are also great as well - definitely better than XBR7

If V5100 is an option, I'd choose that over the Samsung.

I would vote Sony. I am more partial to the way Sony handles the pq over the Samsungs, but those are my eyes. Both make a fine set and I own both brands.

Agreed... Sony... And I own both as well. Also agree that the V5100 is a solid choice at a lower price than the xbr. Don't know the xbr, but I would go v5100 over the Sammy 630.

I would take the Samsung and I own a Sony Rear Projection LCD.

The lustre has come off of Sony and Samsung is the leader by a country mile in quality and price compared to its counterpart.

You should also check out the Toshiba line as they have improved as much as Sony has gone down.

I'm just surprised you'd say Samsung is a leader in quality. Samsung is far from quality - there quality control is horrible - one of the worst in the industry. That's why it's cheaper! I'd take Toshiba over Samsung, and Sony over Toshiba. I'm just sick and tired of Samsung's marketing tricks to save money and give the consumers some uneven quality from set to set, model to model.

Another vote for the V5100!

LN40B630 is an amazing set.

80:000-1 dcr, 4ms, 120hz, 4hdmi, usb/pc/ethernet/srs sound, 10bit panel,

the only difference with the sony KDL-40xbr7 is a higher 8ms and lower 50000-1 dcr. The Samsung also uses 200w power vs 230w on the sony. Winner: Samsung.

Always willing to learn...have you any references to the fact that Samsung's quality control is the worst in the industry.

I am on the cusp of purchasing the B630 or B610 because the picture is simply more stunning to me than the Sony's in the same price range.

Probably not the worst, but definitely one of the worst. Samsung uses different panels, 3 in particular on each model - and each one has cons and pros from each other. When you buy a Samsung television, you expect a Samsung panel. But that isn't the case. A majority of Samsung's models are made from other manufactures of lesser PQ panels and this is a reason why I would never buy another Samsung. I had a Samsung before; but I had to get the panel replaced after a month. The picture quality was horrible compared to the original panel (it was luckily a Samsung panel) but I got a Chi Mei panel as replacement. The likelihood of getting a Chi Mei or AUO panel is at high.

Samsung may have good picture quality regardless - but component quality wise, it is bad. The PQ can also be a reason from the UCP/Glossy screens. I used to like Samsung because of it's colors but I just began to realize how fake and cartoonish the colors looked. Sony was definitely natural to my eyes. Everything glossy, just like a glossy photograph will always look better than a matted photo. This goes the same with a television. However, it can result in colors that are too fake as I said. If all Samsungs had semi-matte or matte; I wonder how different it would look compared to all other brands with semi-matte/matte.....

Once again; this is just like comparing apples to oranges. Sony and Samsung are two different companies - and the television industry doesn't have a universally accepted system to measuring such ratio's and response times. Therefore, that information is useless - not that it will ever be accurate none the less...

But i'd probably only look at the On-screen Contrast Ratio, but it wouldn't be much of a comparison since most televisions range from 3000:1-5000:1 in this area

How do you determine who made the panel?

Also, I thought Sony was in partnership with Samsung whereupon Samsung supplied the panels to Sony.

Interesting what you wrote but I think all manufacturers use multiple sources for their panels. It is not like the old days where everything was done in one plant and then shipped.

Regardless, thanks for the info.

It's true that other companies do it as well - but it really depends on where they get it from. Samsung gets it from several companies with all different standards.

Sony is now partnered with Sharp - so they're getting the panels from them.

Hey, I own all of the brands mentioned here, Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba, LED/LCD, LCD and Plasma. They all work just fine, no issues, they turn on, they do their job...

To the op, buy what you like, they are all good companies, or they would not be in business. How many sets does Samsung, Sony and Toshiba sell each year? If one of these outfits was as bad as some would like to infer, would so many dealers carry them? The mom and pops and big boxes? Would they carry a product that had a 100% return rate? Because if you come here for info that is what one would think. And yes, I am speaking of Samsung. And I am not a fanboy, hell, I told the op to go for the Sony given the choices.

To the OP... Buy what looks good to your eyes, and they all have warranties and the stores all take returns/exchanges. Enough said.

Actually, SONY is partnered with SAMSUNG.

I think you are incorrect in many of your comments.

Take Care,

Craig

You really don't know what you're talking about. Sony and Samsung are almost identical in incidence of repair. Panasonic is better, LG worse, and Mitsu much worse. The problem with "opinions" is that they don't work too well with things that can be measured.
