Very interesting, but not a very good description of the mechanism. It almost seems as if the ion channel emulates an accelerometer (or vice versa). The "strings" opening channels in the basal tissue are intuitive. But what good are channels in the tips? I wonder if the researchers even have an idea.

Well, whatever K+ gets in will affect the response and these may be, as you suggest, higher-order differentiating receptors.
