Sprayed speaker cabinets today with Benjamin Moore 217 Alkyd underbody using my porter cable HVLP conversion gun (large tip).

Sprayed like a dream, no thinning needed. Sprayed it fully wet, little orange peel, flowed out great. Will sand a bit tomorrow and spray black latex on top.

So this would make for a better primer if doing piano gloss as opposed to an automotive primer? I ask because I've never messed with anything other than automotive oriented paints.

Don't know, but my goal is utility grade flat black. I will say that the finish would be goo enough for a gloss topcoat.

Moreover, this stuff was the best I could find at the local paint store (a very complet store, but no automotice finished) that was heavy bodied, oil based, high build and sandable.

FYI, I used a 2mm tip and had it tinted gray to facilitate the black topcoat.

Where did you/does one buy the automotive paints?
