Long-time member with my first post with much thanks to all of the wonderful plasma contributors on this forum (Optivity, D-nice, etc...) who have helped me immensely. I never felt the need to post due to the wonders of avs search, but now I'm troubled. I have had my 111 for about 2 months after using D-nice's 111 break-in settings, but the one major problem I has seen with my Elite is the appearance of noise on the screen from about 4-5 ft from the screen. Since my room is small and I like the immersion factor of a big screen in a small room, this is my normal viewing distance. Checking the trusty search engine on avs, am I seeing "dancing pixels" on the screen?? I see it regardless of input (e.g., all Blu-ray content (ps3), cable, etc.) and it is very noticeable and distracting on all content. I have seen posts that have identified it with Samsungs and Pannys, but never for Pioneer. Some of the Samsung posts suggested turning down the brightness, this did not help
I also own a 42" LG LCD that is positioned on the wall directly behind my Elite and I don't see this phenomenon with my LG, so I don't believe it's a power issue. I wish I could take a good picture of it but unfortunately I can't with my camera. Is this fixable or is it something I will have to live with any Elite?? Is it intrinsic to all plasmas (this is my first plasma after several LCDs)?? Thank you and happy holidays to all!!

Are you running in Pure mode per D-Nice settings?

All plasmas have dancing pixels if you sit too close. Some of that is processing and if you use the Pure settings by D-Nice that minimizes processing and minimizes the dancing pixels.

Funny Chad
Maybe I ask them to try the Samba. Yeah, I tried it on Pure, but I still see it. Besides, not a particular fan of Pure mode with D-nice's settings (no offense to you of course, D-nice!), too dull, not "punchy" enough for me. I generally use either Optimum or D-nice's Performance settings but in Color Space 1 (I realize it isn't as accurate, but I like my whites on the blue side, I just doesn't look right in Color Space 2 to me). Any other thoughts besides calling good ole Pioneer directly??

Mswlogo, so you think that this is something I will just have to get to use to most likely then?? I wonder if I would be better off with the Samsung 950 if this is a plasma specific problem?? My B&M where I purchased the display has a 3 month policy where the screen can be upgraded within 3 months for a more expensive display (e.g., 950, 151/141, or xbr8).

I don't perceive any of the other stuff that plagues most plasma or LCD I think (I don't perceive motion blur or blooming on my non-120 Hz LG, nor do I perceive phosphor trails on my Elite). I would certainly lose viewing angle with the 950, but I wonder if the extra 5" would make up the difference??

It seems to me that if you sit 4-5' from a 50" TV then you will be staring at pixels, rather than being immersed in the picture. My guess is that's what you are doing.

Bushman, no it occurs on all sources, this including blu-ray on my ps3 (and using reference material like pixar movies).

Brent, I don't think it's that odd to sit 5' away from a 50", I mean even at stores like best buy, the distance at the screens on the wall is closer and I don't believe that I remember seeing this.

Fanaticalism, if you were to sit closer to the screen at my distance (if possible in your setup) do you see this since it seems you don't at 7'. So you think this might be a defective panel then if not??

Plasma pixels can basically only ever be on or off, they can't be adjusted like other screen types (e.g. CRT) to create shades.

To do so, they have to strobe the pixels on/off at different rates to fool the eye into perceiving different levels of brightness, and then use lots of dithering/halftoning to improve the appearance of the image created with this limited number of steps.

The downside to this is that once you get closer to the screen, you can see these "dancing pixels" as a result.

The same thing applies to DLP technology as well.

I can see these things, which are essentially picture structure.... IF I get in that 4-5' range on my 5010.

Less "smooth" modes like optimal will also likely exhibit more of this type of thing.

Absolutely correct. OP is sitting too close to the screen. High CR/brightness settings can/will also contribute to the problem.
