I'm looking for advice on new ht sub but don't know if 1 big(15") or 2 medium(10",12")for my set up i have a onkyo 805 with 5.1 speaker set-up. Budget $500 include shipping, Size something like 16" to 22" box, My room is open to the rest of the house counting all that space is like 10,000 cf, Use for br movies 70% for ps3 & xb360 games 20% and for music 10% of the time, Listening habits= i like to hear the bass like 20% & feel it 80% i want to feel the action. Finish color black but well finish doen't have to be piano black, mate is ok but to look descent , Time frame like 1 or 2 weeks may be up to a month but sooner better. If i have to come up with some more $ to get some thing good if have to be well worth you know wife is gonna ask how much. Thanks all for advice.

For $500 you can not purchase a commercial sub that will provide much impact in that much cubic footage.

I agree with the previous poster to try the DIY approach .... or up your budget a BUNCH!!

Check out Epics 15" subs on there web site or call them. A couple of hundred more dollars, but you will be blown away. I have an Epic Phoenix, but all the guys on the Epic thread are very happy with there 15" Epic's. They will definitely shake the floor. Also Craig's sub list will give you some idea of the the top subs, for the money, which you can find on the subwoofer thread. Good luck.

Pretty sure you are going to see $630 from an MFW after you include shipping - but I think you're looking in the right category.

Hsu and SVS should also have comparable subs in that range with good looks. I have the MBM-12 Hsu with their black matte finish and it's not as rough as I expected it to be.

With that size space, I doubt you'll be able to find one sub to fill it. A safe way to play it might be to order 1 sub first, install it - and then see how much more of a need you have for a second sub.

I would shoot for nearfield placement if possible.

The HSU MBM-12 is not a true sub, it does mid bass only and rolls off at 50 hz down. I have two of them with my mains and use them for mid bass.

Bill, judging from your picture and equiptment listed on the link in your sig it seems that your mains are more than capable in the midbass department. What motivated you to seek more midbass from the mbm's?

Apologies if it was not clear, but I mentioned the finish on the MBM because he listed finish quality as a concern.

From Hsu, he should be looking at a VTF-2 Mk3 - and maybe add another one later.

Then there's Epik if he wants to really start stretching his budget.

I love mid bass! My room is over 6000 cu ft and the position of the Polk SDA 2.3's is not the best for bass from the speakers so with the MBM's I can tune up the mid bass. My reciever LFE crossover it set at 100 hz so the MBM's still does get some mid bass down 40 hz or so. The MBM's really start at 40 and start blending at 50 hz. I run my setup as "small" and have run it as large also, and there is not too much difference between the two with this setup (at least by ear). I listen to audio on the reciever at -6 for SD and -10 to -14 for BD. I have listened at -0, and it shakes the room so bad you think you are in an earthquake.

Fair enough Bill.

So regarding the MBM's, did you find them difficult to intergrate with the rest of your system? I remeber reading something about them requiring an add on time delay device to get them to correctly sync, did you experience this? I have 2 sub outs on my reciever, do you think I could just put the mbm on the 2nd out and then use the crossovers on the mbm and my current sub and be propperly setup?

Some people are more sensitive to any time delay than others. I think that some of this depends on where you place your MBM. If you place an MBM really close to the listening position and have your deep bass sub up front near your mains this would increase the possibility of hearing a time delay.

It seems to me that an increasing number of people are placing their MBM up front with their main speakers (and their deep bass sub). This should significantly reduce the time delay.

If you were to get an MBM the most recommended true solution is to simply get a Behringer Feedback Destroyer.

If you learn to use REW you can also use the Feedback Destroyer as an equalizer. Lots of peope like it because it only costs $99 (plus the effort to learn how to use REW). People who already have the Feedback Destroyer set up and running properly are willing to help you with REW.
