I have one 5080 that can be used to turn a 5500 into an unactivated 5080 to gain commercial skip and IVS for $55 or you can have the 5080 unit with a 40 hour drive for $170 including remote and shipping. Email me if interested.

Thanks

Mikeyboy, just out of curiosity for the $55 option are you transplanting the ROM from the 5080 to the 55xx?

Yes, that's how it's done. I remove the 5500 eprom and solder a socket to the 5500 board. Then insert the 5080 eprom and you've got a 5080.

Is this a service of yours? I wanted to buy a ReplayTV for a friend but I wanted a 50x0 so I can send her shows and introduce her to Poopli. She's a torrent addict as it is.

OK thanks Mikeyboy that's what I thought. frankz00 remember that this solution requires an available 50xx in the first place from which to pull the EEPROM from so chances are Mikeyboy doesn't have too many unactivated 50xx EEPROMs left to make a regular service out of it.

moyeki is right. I get an unactivated 5000 series every now and then and can either part it out or sell it whole. If Frankz00 wants it whole, it is still available.

just curious (not interested in buying another unit)....eproms are those black rectangles with "legs" right? why would you take one out of a 5000 unit to put it into a 5500 unit to make it a "5000" unit? why not just use the 5000 unit from the get go? ....i'd undertand if the 5000 was damaged, but otherwise i don't understand.

A 5000 is preferred over a 5500 by many people due to effortless CS and IVS. I would choose a 5000 over a 5500 for commercial skip any day. I imagine there is someone with a monthly activated 5500, who would rather have the functions of a 5000 without going the Wirns route. In my case, this 5000 is worth more to me selling individual components than the entire unit. This 5000 is also available whole should someone want it.

i am aware of that, but why take the eproms out of a 5000 and swap them out with that of a 5500? Now the 5000 is left without its original eproms rendering its CAV, IVS capabilities worthless...no? And in that case, just levae the eproms alone, leave the 5500 alone, and just use the 5000 to begin with.

Because I don't need the 5000. It's worth more $ to me selling the components but if someone wants the entire unit they can have it.
