K my roommates and I just set up a 5 channel system and I was completely blown away. It makes everything so much better than through basic stereo sound, even though the front 2, back 2, and center are each a different speaker. After blowing 1600 on a new WEGA I've decided not to go for a TIVO and instead get better matching speakers. Mainly I just want to blow away my buddies’ speakers so I have bragging rights.
His, that we are using as our front mains, are Bose 501 series IV circa 1984. I'm looking at a max price of $600 for new mains and a $400 center. Specifically I'm looking at the polk rt-55i's and rt-400i. Those retail at $600 and $400. I'm very tempted to step down and get a sub but am not sure. I have been very happy with my polk mini-monitors that we use in the back but have that desire to have bragging rights. You all know the feeling.
My question is what do I need to blow away those old Bose speakers? They are Bose like I've never seen. Big old cube towers kinda. But as I was only 5 years old when they came out I don’t have a point of reference on this. I know that many of you are old enough remember this so please let me know in this thread.
