Hey guys, I could use some help. I was recently able to get a hold of most of a Sony Home Theater In A Box. Basically, I have all the speakers and the wires but I'm missing the DVD player.

Is this all junk or is there away I can salvage these speakers? If so, where do I begin?

I'm a noob so if you need more details please let me know. I can also provide you with pictures if that will help.

Well, there are a couple ways you could go but it depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to achieve. I guess you could go find the DVD unit, or a similar unit, on eBay but it's iffy what you'd end up with and you wouldn't be able to improve on it later. Or, you could buy a proper receiver and use those Sony speakers for the time being and later buy better speakers but that might not jive with your plans right now. Computer speakers? Garage speakers? It depends on you, what do you want to do?

So I need a receiver?

If I got this one...

...would I be able to hook up the speakers?

Keep in mind that all of the wires I have are these:

How do the speakers get their power? Through the receiver?

Thanks for helping me out.

Yes. You'd just have to cut the plug off the receiver end of the speaker wire you have and hook it up to the terminals on the receiver. To echo the other poster above, just pick up a receiver and use those speakers for now. Pick up better speakers as you go and you'll be fine.

There's a chance that a cheap receiver and those speakers will be fine for your ears. If it is, good for you.

Cool, pictures! Do you have pictures of the speakers?

Yes, you can probably connect them to a receiver but what's your ultimate goal?

My goal is to have set up my first 5.1 system to listen to DVDs and Blu-rays. I hope that in the future I'll be able to upgrade the parts one by one as I learn more.

Okay, I'm going to ask some dumb questions.

1) What you mean by cutting?

2) How do I find the receiver end?

1. Unless you go buy a Sony HTIB receiver, which it doesn't sound like you'll be doing, you need to take wire cutters/scissors/sharp something and lob those plastic proprietary plugs off one end of the speaker wire. More than likely, your new receiver is going to take bare wire just like the speakers do.

2. It's the end that's not currently bare wire, and has a plastic plug on it.
