I'd like some input, a better list maybe? And, if possible, do a cross comparison to another one that is similar or better. Or, cheaper and better would be nice too.

Basically, I'm looking for near-field active monitors to pair with a desktop. I'm considering a KECES usb DAC, but right now I just want to get the speakers first. I've come up with a few options, but would like more feedback as to how each compares to one another. I'd like to keep comparisons within price brackets (used) so the speakers are within their competitors. I know a bx5a is no match for a Quad 12L =]. What I'm wondering, is there something else that can be had that is similar for slightly cheaper? I'd like to keep under 600. If you know of some hidden gems anything under 600 please list them!

-150-200-

Audioengine a2

M-Audio bx5

M-Audio bx5a (newer, without the different switches in the back)

-200-350-

Wharfedale 8.2a

Audioengine a5

-over 450-

Quad 11L

Quad 12L

Quad 12L2

Is size an issue? Also, what kind of quality and frequency range are you shooting for?

The Mackies are a great choice. I've used the 828 in a professional setting on several occasions. They're a great monitor at a decent price, too.

What other active monitors have you used within the OP's price range? I know that Dynaudio has some. I only assume that they are at least decent, but I don't have a local dealer for them. Genelec supposedly makes nice stuff, but they are very pricey even for the "entry-level" stuff. Also, JBL has a line that automatically calibrates itself based on measurements from its own microphone, but they are also somewhat expensive too...

Haven't had a lot of 'ears-on' time with the Genelecs, but I believe they do have some smaller, more affordable 'entry level' stuff. The JBLs I've used are ok, but again, not a lot of time with them, except for the now discontinued Control 1 and Control 5. Check the Tannoy line . They have some nice co-axial monitors, as well as traditional cabinets, but can get pricy as you head up their line.

My personal monitors are a pair of Meyer HD-1s. They're absolutely amazing, but at *cough*$2400 a piece*cough* they're a bit out of the OPs range...

The really nice thing about the Mackie 828, is it can run fairly well without a sub. A whole bunch of the small to mid range monitors really, really have to have subs.

The biggest thing, is to try to find a local dealer, or someone who has the box you're looking for, to get some ear time with them. A monitor can sound really nice for 30 seconds to a minute, but can start to be really harsh after a while.
