I need speaker recommendations for a small room.

Currently I'm in a 9'x12' room and I want to replace a pair of BIC Formula FH-65B speakers. I'd like to upgrade them finally to a greater pair. My budget is up to $700 for a pair. I mainly listen to Jazz, classical, fusion, and sometimes some electronica like Tangerine Dream every once in a while. My setup will include a subwoofer, but I'd like the mains with a wide frequency range as possible. They will be driven by an Onkyo TX-8050 stereo receiver.

Thanks

These Focal Chorus towers are a great deal.
If you want bookshelf -

Focal 806V
http://www.musicdirect.com/p-139677-focal-chorus-806v-bookshelf-speakers-pr.aspx

Also, a real nice bookshelf with good detail, definition and resolution >> with good tight

bass, that will top some 6 inch woofers - I also own them

JBL Studio 530
http://www.amazon.com/JBL-Studio-530-Bookshelf-Loudspeakers/dp/B00622STI0
Since they are on sale do you think the Focal 807 are and upgrade to the 806?
Those Focals would be a good choice, other options to consider:

EMP E55Ti

HTD Level 3 Towers

Arx A5
The 807 has a slightly larger woofer than the 806, 7" vs 6.5". So you'll get a little more bass out of it.

You might want to go for the towers which will give you more bass. Plus if you buy the bookshelf speakers more than likely you'll need to purchase stands too which will add to the cost.
Hi :

Any speaker that Focal makes is fantastic. I have a 7.1 all Focal speaker set up and love it... Check out the audiogon site online you may just get lucky and find something great used.

Good luck you can not go wrong with Focal but there are a lot of good loudspeakers on the market. Also remember you may not always have a small room so do not limit yourself with a small speaker.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread here. But I got a quick question. I found a set of Focal Chorus 806V's for sale locally for $400 should I buy them? They don't have a box of any kind. I am needing some rear speakers and was thinking about suspending them from the ceiling.

What dose everyone think should I jump on this?
As an Update: I wound up with a pair of Focal Chorus 807 W Prestige.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Now it's your turn. How do you like them?

I've only had them for about an hour, shuffling through various tracks. Rights from the beginning they don't go as deep in bass as my FH-65B, but the soundstage is bigger and has more depth. They are louder than the my previous speakers too.
surprised the Focal's are louder. Bic claims a sensitivity of 96db for the FH65B while Focal claims a sensitivity of 92db for the 807.

The Bic should be louder at the same volume setting but apparently that's not true.

I believe Bic is being optimistic about their sensitivity specs, like Klipsch.

Focal tends to be more realistic about their specs.

It's difficult for me to put into words, though the volume is the same , it's like I'm hearing it from a different perspective. Instead of standing in the doorway listening to the musicians, I've been invited to the third row seat from the front. The band doesn't play louder, I'm just closer to the stage which is much larger.

Yeah what you are hearing is a more immersive sound stage and improved imaging. A speaker that images well can help place specific instruments and voices in space, so you can tell the guitar is playing from a specific location, and the drums are in the middle but farther back. Focal makes great speakers, and you are learning first hand the difference in quality.

Nice! Once you get your new subwoofer, that will help to fill in the bottom end. Check out the AVS subwoofer forum to get help on subs.

Actually I already own a subwoofer, which these new speakers are presenting a challenge with. With my previous speakers my Dayton Sub-1200 sounded big and loud, so I was careful with the crossover and gains. But with the Focals the sub is barely audible. I have moved the cross over to 70 and the gain is almost at max, and it sounds very weak. I wonder if the Focal Speakers are taking too much power from my receiver, leaving less for the sub. Even worse since the Focals are louder I have to turn the volume down from 40 to 30 on the reciever, which is too low for the sub's Auto Switching to kick in. Has anyone else experienced this?

Make sure your speakers are set to "small" in the receiver. If set to large, they will be getting the full-range signal making your crossover less effective.

I don't have that type of receiver. It's a Onkyo TX-8050 which is stereo only, the out put is full range and subwoofer pre out cross over is 100hz.

Oh I see, I would then set your sub crossover to the maximum setting, since you have the stereo receiver already applying a crossover of 100Hz.
