I saw no rainbows even when trying to!

I helped my friend setup his new BenQ MP522 projector (by the way the projection calc on projectorcentral for this model is WAY off, the throw distance is about twice what they day).

Because I was expecting pjcentral's calc to be accurate we ended up with a tiny 32" or so foot screen rather than 72", but it was just temporary to test it anyway.

We tried seeing rainbows and no matter what I couldn't, I tried darting my eyes accross the screen, putting a black on white circle, putting fast action video, and I couldn't get myseld to see anything but high quality video and images. Could it be due to the tiny screen size?

Also, the black levels weren't what I expected but then again it's only 1000:1 contrast, the screen was absurdly small, and it is a 2000 lumen projector (the whites were absolutely blinding).

I'm planning on getting the Sharp DT-510 which has 4000:1 contrast so it should be better, but I was glad we didn't see rainbows or get headaches.

The person's sensitivity to it and the speed of the colour wheel make a difference.

I can see it with a 4X colour wheel. I dunno with a 6X colour wheel on more modern equipment though, since I haven't done the testing with 6X stuff. (I ended up buying an LCD over DLP, so I stopped seriously investigating projectors at that point.)
If you're anything like me, you'll just start seeing them out of nowhere one day and you'll hate yourself for TRYING to see them.

Hopefully you'll never see them.
I don't know about this particular machine, look at the aspect ratio test (white circle against a black background) on DVDs with the THX optimizer. You may see rainbows on this scene.
I saw it again today installed at his place, I was quite surprised that the blacks are barely better than my 450:1 contrast ratio LCD, his is rated at 1000:1. I thought DLP made good blacks... I hope the 4000:1 DT-510 I'll get is better.
When I initially set-up my X1 years ago I saw them on occasion, but as time went on I completely stopped seeing them.

Now, as expected with my new HC1500 and its faster wheel, I still don't see them.

Well, some LCDs reportedly have very good blacks. The PT-AE3000U is one.

Large screens where you have to move your eyes around more, make it more pronouced. For me anyways....

When you run these data PJs on bright, you aren't going to see the difference in CR.

You need 2,000:1 before you notice a difference without calibrating and if there is any ambient light issues, no CR is going to look different than an office data PJ.
What do you mean by "on bright"? Bright as in the lamp in not economy mode? It was in economy and the blacks were still quite poor. Other than that it makes a great image, like my LCD.

No, bright as in you haven't calibrated the brightness and contrast and instead having the PJ blasting at it's highest lumens level possible, regardless of lamp setting.
I have a Sharp DT-510, and I've been thrilled with it so far. As for rainbows, the Dt-510 has a 5X color wheel, so it's not a big problem. But I did notice that during the Lost title screen (where the word "LOST" is in large, white text spinning towards you), I can see rainbows if I dart my eyes around. Other than that, though, I've never been able to see any.
I've never seen rainbows unless I tried to... or deliberately walked through B&W content with my Infocus X1. But, I did find the X1 and other DLP faster projectors fatiguing to watch.

OP you need to try your full sized 72" image and B&W film content. (Of course, you may not be interested in B&W films, but try them... I found they were the easiest way to see Rainbows as the colors stick out more, like the Lost titles).

Has anyone here seen rainbows with a 6X colour wheel?

There are those who insist they see rainbows no matter what the X. Maybe they do. As for me, not so much as a ghost or UFO, much less a rainbow. But I did get 25 of 25 on my colorblind test.
