I must be getting older and confused by wiring, so please bear with me. I am looking at a very basic setup - new LCD TV (component video and HDMI), receiver, and a DVD player (also with HDMI). I'd like to set things up so that the DVD player could be used by the kids using the TVs speakers only. However, when I watch a movie on DVD, I'd like to be able to listen to it via my 5.1 surround system.

If I connect the DVD player to the TV via HDMI, and then also run audio cables from the DVD to the receiver, does that solve my issue?

Thanks for any help! Don't laugh!

Yes... connect the HDMI from the DVD player to the TV for non-5.1.

Add a connection from the DVD player to the receiver (surround system) using either optical or digital coax (whichever is available) for 5.1.
