xvYCC is backward compatible since it only uses the below black and above white part of the video signal. It does have some severe technical limitations. Since it only uses the below black and above white part of the video signal you can't use xvYCC for real time graphics processing which is why you have never heard of any video games that support it. And since xvYCC uses only a small amount of the video signal it can only increase the size of the color space by a small amount without causing color banding. xvYCC isn't proprietary but the only company that I have seen promoting it is Sony. I think that a much better option is the Rec. 2020 color space which will be used in the future with UHDTV. I am hoping that the 4K version of Blu-ray supports the Rec. 2020 color space.
