Hi all

I have an 84" 4X3 draper screen which I'm sick of.

It has become very wavey in a short amount of time, My goal is to have a 16x9 screen without paying the wide prices.

I'm going to buy a 4'x8' piece of drywall,the actual 16x9 measurements would be 48"X84" leaving you with about 6" per side for screwing it to the wall fill the holes paint it white and boom perfect screen right! wrong!


I need help with what kind of paint to use, I've read KBK's posts about mixing the Ralph Lauren studio white with gesso Matte and adding pearlescent powder but nobody and i mean nobody in the city carries the powder. will the studio white be good enough? I have my projector set to the 48"X85" shooting on to a white sheet with Gladiator 2.35:1 ratio and was drooling so i want to start as soon as possible.

I know where you're coming from. I am in the process of building a screen and am wavering between cloth on a frame and drywall.

I emailed him the exact same response.

I had a friend make a 58"x104" drywall screen.

Will post pictures as soon as my digital camera arrives.


Before I saw the nice drywall screen from Torre, I was going to use curtain blackout fabric from Joann's.

I still have the fabric but I'm not going to use it.

I think sheetrock is the way to go!!!

Actually I've attached the drywall stright to my drywalled wall,the reason for this is the drywall underneath has dents nail holes and would need alot of work so basically i didn't do any framing for it. The trick is using a stud finder to locate the right spot to screw in the ends i want to avoid puting screws anywhere near the viewing are I will paint or fabric the 6" sides with black material then picture frame around the drywall,curtains on the sides sound absorbing material under the curtains then I'm laughing.

Nobody has any solid answers about the paint?

As far as paint goes, there seams to be a couple of opinions based on type of projector. CRT type prefer the flat white color (Behr Ultra White or Glidden flat white) and some of the LCD/DLP crowd like the gray color. I'm part of the later crowd having a Sony VW10HT. I made my screen and got some Glidden interior flat white and Glidden flat black from Home Depot. I mixed to get a color that is darker then 'Snowfield' and lighter then 'veil'...it is close to 'Universal Gray'. The blacks are greatly improved, and the whites are still clean and bright. I used a 'smooth surface' roller and applied about 3 coats to the back side of wood panneling (cheapest one Home Depot had, about $6). This provided a very smooth and light weight alternative to drywall, and is also 4x8 in size. I then framed it out with 1x2 pine wraped in black felt like material. I then hung on wall using 'drop ceiling wire'.

My friend that created my sheetrock screen, attached it to a wall.

Basically, underneath the sheetrock screen is wood.

I think he said 2x4s.

The reason he attached it to another sheetrock wall was because he said I might want to remove the screen one day.

I said, "No, this is going to be a permanent screen"


Also, he said that the screen is nailed to each stud behind the wall.

He said that you can sit on the top of the screen and it won't fall down.

Once I get my digital camera, I'll take pictures.

amazing how many people with exactly the same ideas "we're not alone"


I just figured sheetrock would give me the perfect dimensions for the size of screen I'm using there will be no seems or screw fills in the viewing area so it should work out just fine.


I read the link and was happy to see it had worked, I'm still unsure about the paint but i guess experimenting like everyone else has will be an option , I was hoping for a magical paint formula

Is your screen constructed the same way: 2x4 foundation with drywall attached on top? I'm leaning towards that design, my only worry is weight.
