I've got a Sony RM-VL900 remote control, and have been trying to use it to control my ReplayTV. One key that has been causing me problems is the EXIT key. I've bought a LOT of remote controls in my life, and few if any have a specific EXIT key. Anyway, I notice that EXIT is actually used quite a bit within the UI, and I'm wondering why we couldn't replace the EXIT key with the STOP key. That way more universal remote controls could control a ReplayTV.

If I remember correctly, their is one specific blue screen menu that appears when your done watching a recorded show, or perhaps when you attempt to change channels and your watching something that is delayed, that requires you to press the EXIT key. Since I cannot find an open key to map EXIT to, I'm always required to dig out my original ReplayTV remote, just to get out of this menu.

Anyway, I'd like to see a discussion here, where we can simplify the number of required buttons on the ReplayTV remote.

Hi guys,

What blue screen is it? I thought that you could pretty much get out of any screen by pressing the Channel Guide button, taking you back to the channel guide. 3.0 might have changed that though.

One thing I have wanted fora long time is to make the "Return T Live" be a panic button that would take you back to TV from whereever you were, even if you were burried 8 screens down in Setup. That *could* help you out, if you had Return To Live mapped on your remote.

There must be a better classification available than 'transport' these days, mustn't there? Since there is no longer any physical tape to 'transport' it seems the verbiage doesn't apply. But what else would self describe the grouping of those particular functions... Hmmmmm..

I just hit [Menu] if I need to get out of a screen or hit the screen I want to go to ([Channel Guide] or [Replay Guide] or [Zones]). Hitting any of these again toggles it off and returns you to live or recorded TV.

I am thinking about using the [Muting] button for [Exit], since I always pause instead of muting. Why miss watch only the video when the phone rings? I only use Muting so I don't find out the hockey score while trying to play it from the beginning while it's still recording. But I can always use [TV][Muting] to do that.

Don't let this one minor complaint stop you from buying this otherwise quality remote. It has nice, large, spaced-out, well-placed buttons and is about 1 button shy of working perfectly for Replay. It also has full learning. I also love the slight glowing backlight, so you can read the buttons in the dark.

This is the only button missing from my setup and I love the feel and placement of the buttons on the Sony. Only in setup screens do I have to reach for the Replay remote for the Exit button. I can always get by without it otherwise.

I found it infinitely preferable to the Radio Shack 15-1994.

Yeah, but the way the Return to Live button is labeled, not the icon, but the words "return to live", make a lot of people think it is NOT a transport button at all, but a form of exit button.

Perhaps a NEW button is needed, labeled END, that is just like the Return to Live button, but is not an escape key http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif Just kidding!

Hmmm, I always thought "Transport" keys were the movement keys. Up, down, left, right.

I'm just trying to start a discussion on why ReplayTV has so many keys. I'm curious why ReplayTV is trying to move away from the play, stop, etc (guess transport keys) keys doing double duty.

My main problem is that when you have custom keys, like quickskip, you're forcing users to map them onto strange (hard to remember) keys on a universal remote control. By using STOP instead, it's easy to know what key needs to be pressed.

I'll try to find the menu situations that force you to press EXIT. Like PRMan, I usually use the trick of pressing GUIDE (which pulls up the TV guide), then press it a second time. This usually preforms an EXIT, but not always.

The screen I'm thinking of...and I cannot remember exactly; was saying something like "To delete the program, press SELECT, to return to Television, press EXIT". Pressing the GUIDE button does not get me out of this menu.

The screen I have trouble with is where you set up a guaranteed record and there is a conflict or you don't have space. The only way to cancel it is [Exit]. I just change it to non-guaranteed instead and hit Done. Then, when I have resolved the conflict, I can just select it in the Replay Guide and change it to guaranteed.

ReplayMike:

You've got a good point. Maybe some people do use the original remote control. Have you guys done any studies to find out what percentage of your customers use the original remote, compared to how many use a universal remote? It would be interesting to find out those numbers.

Since you say your looking at the source code, I'll take your word for it. I could be thinking of something from 1.0, 2.0...or maybe I'm just plan nuts. I just know I've put my original remote away in a closet, and for some reason, I keep having to take it out. I'll try to find it tonight if I can.

I plan on buying a MX-1000 or Pronto for Christmas, so it'll get fixed then.

Since ReplayMike's so active here, I'll post one small suggestion...

When I'm watching a show, and it reaches the end, I push stop, and a dialog pops up that tells me I can push SELECT to delete the program, or something else (not sure what, I usually delete). I push SELECT. The program gets deleted and I'm left at a blue screen giving me two options again - like Press Replay Guide to go to ... Press Channel Guide to go to.... Any user knows this already - After deleting a program in this sequence the user should be dropped off at the Replay Guide. Saves a button hunt and push.

I'll vote for that one! I hate having to navigate back to the Replay Guide at the end of a show.
