Idea: rent to own!

One of the main obsticals in trying to get a PVR in every household in America is trying to get people to understand what the damn thing is before they shell out something in the neighborhood of $500 for an A/V component.

That being said, I think we can all agree that once someone has had the chance to try out a PVR for a few weeks there's very little chance that they are gonna want to give it back at any cost.

So, how about having Replay start some kinda rent-to-own program. I think it should ideally involve getting the first month free, you would be able to buy the unit at any point for a price agreed upon at the start of the transaction, but after the first month the unit will cost for a fixed amount per month. If the customer is as blown away as I think they will be all they have to do is pay the purchase price in the first 30 days and they've lost nothing, at this point they can take part in any rebate programs or whatever else is going on atthe time, if they don't like it they can return it "no questions asked", if they are still unsure after 30 days, they can continue renting it for as long as it takes them to make up their minds.

The units that are given out in this program needn't always be brand new units, they could also be returned former rentals as well as other units that have been returned but are in 100% working condition, after all, this is rental.

That constitutes the use of credit, which can be extensive to setup and impliment. There's already a try-or-buy method, it's called a return policy http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif Pay with a credit card and you don't pay unless you keep it, in some cases up to 90 day return policies.
There are probably companies that could better offer this type of service. DirecTV would be a good candidate, of course, except that they are more heavily invested in TiVo. Maybe Dish Network would be smart to do this too, but they've got the DishPlayer device...
Replay is currently working with some cable companies to be the 'set top box' which is rented/leased by the cable subscriber. I know one trial is with Comcast in Cherry Hill, NJ (outside Philadelphia).

DirecTV is in working with Tivo and with Microsoft, and in some areas subscribers can rent/lease the directv receivers (in my area, from Verizon, formerly Bell Atlantic) for $5 or $10 a month, I think. Maybe they'll start renting DirecTivos or UltimateTVs. They currently rent Hughes branded DirecTV receivers.
