If your main concern is HT, is it wiser to get really good towers, or really, really good monitors?

Towers are good if you have a huge room, otherwise logistics are much better with bookshelf. They are easier to place and give excellent imaging and focus, two attributes greatly needed by a properly setup HT system. Improperly placed towers are more vulnerable to room acoustics and blending them with the surrounds can be a real nightmare.

I replaced my floorstander fronts with bookshelf speakers three years ago because I felt I was wasting the potential of good speakers. If your HT is primarily for movies then, yes, bookshelves to me work better than floorstanders.

You don't need towers for HT but you definitely need a good sub.
