I apologize, I'm a newb.

I'm preparing to purcase a new TV. I've almost decided on the 50" Pioneer plasma, but rp prices are very tempting and would allow me to spend more money elsewhere (speakers, subs, reciever, etc.) My question is, if LCOS is much better than the rp alternatives, why is not utilized by more manufacturers and why are JVC tvs not considered significantly better than the other brands?

I will be watching some HD material, but like everyone the majority of my viewing will be in SD.

Just to let you know I'm planning on buying the new onkyo 805, av123 speakers (x-mtms, x-sls and x-cs with 2 x sub) and an oppo981.

LCOS probably will be the best once JVC incorporates their increased contrast ratio technology in their RPTVs. Also, when lasers or LEDs are used as light sources, you will have an unbeatable combination. Now, however, DLP looks very good as well and there is no clear winner. It's a matter of taste.

Several companies tried to produce them and stopped because it proved too challenging to make with sufficient quality. So far only JVC and Sony have been able to pull it off.

Personally I love my G-series JVC D-ILA and even though it's only 720p I think it compares well with anything else on the market. It's main weakness is the quality of the blacks but more recent models have improved this with a dynamic iris.

When I do comparisons in stores the Sony SXRDs look very good but to my eyes not clearly superior to JVC. I've always found DLPs to look artificially sharp, and prefer the smoother look of LCOS, but others may feel different. LCD, whether projection or flat screen, looks inferior to me because of the screen-door effect.

There is no best technology. Last year, Sony LCOS came out on top of a 1080p shootout at Home Theater. This year, Samsung DLP came out on top, JVC LCOS 2nd, and Sony 4th. They are very close, and it just comes down to personal preference.

I agree with the first sentence, but I don't agree with the second.

JVC, and Sony both have made the decision to go into production, but I wouldn't be so sure that they have solutions to the problems some of the other manufacturers had early on. LCoS panel failures because of thermal issues resulting in color uniformity problems still seem to be prevalent amongst these two brands.

There are no issues with my Sony, and it appeared when I was researching TV's that my second choice (Sammy DLP) had a considerably higher rate of issues. I haven't seen any hard data on it, but the frequency of people with problems seemed higher with the sammy.

As far as JVC is concerned, that is neither my personal experience nor do I see much evidence in this forum.

I have a 52" JVC and I enjoy it very much. I was planning on getting a 46" Sammy DLP, but they gave me the JVC for the same price. I wondered why, but I have enjoyed it very much since I got it. Colors are good, blacks are good, SD is very watch able, HD is amazing, my old 8 year old DVD player looks great through componets. I have had zero problems since Feb (crossing my fingers). I would say that the JVC LCoS is a very good option at this point in time. I have yet to see the silk screen effect on my TV.

What you need to do is to find the tech that looks best to you. They all have their weaknesses and their strengths, but there are armies who will swear by each one.

If you see rainbows (like I do), LCOS is a clear cut choice over DLP. Perhaps once the LED technology matures, the LED DLP sets may be an option.

marshtj - the majority of viewing for 'everyone' isn't SD. Most of my prime time, movie watching and gaming is now in HD. The only SD I regulalrly watch now is reality TV and Formula 1 races....

I have a Sony SXRD and I'm often wowed by the HD PQ that I receive through D*. That said the newer LCD sets look best to my eyes but these sets are also expensive when you go above 46". I've looked at DLP too but the SXRD always looks better but not by a wide margin. I think you'll be happy with plasma, LCD or SXRD. Plasma is not a consideration (had one and returned it) because of all the reflections that come off the glass screen.

Word of warning, if you like watching sports and movies with lots of blacks, avoid LCD panels like the plague. They're improving in these areas, but have a long way to go.

SSE is silk screen effect and SDE is screen door effect. SSE are the sparklies you see in white areas in a scene. The funny thing is that my 32" Toshiba set (an old CRT) has them too. Many times you can adjust the set to minimize these sparklies. SDE can be seen when you get close to a set and the pixels are visible. Some of what you see is from compression. I wonder how much better my SXRD picture would look if there wasn't any SDE.

Boy what a hard choice now! My older JVC HD-ILA (1080i) is behind the times. I have enjoyed it for over 2 years now, and it even survived a move from CA to TX. But soon I will be buying the Onkyo 805 with HDMI 1.3, and I have a PS3 for a BD player, so will now need the full 1080p (and if possible, 24fps capability).

My choices are the new Samsung HLT 89 series, or the Sony SXRD, or the latest JVC HD-ILA. Which would be the better one? Have any of you physically seen or used one of these? Thanks

WRX_Rocky,

I just purchsed the Samsung HLT 6187S yesterday from Best Buy. It was vastly more expensive than the JVC HD-ILA 61FN97 but I liked its exterior appearance more and from the reviews I read in the Home Theatre Mag Face Off, I chose the Samsung. I think most important to me is real and natural colors, I think Samsung is champion at that from my reading.

I went to Best Buy with all intentions of getting the JVC but I changed my mind while I was there. I decided against a Sony because they were at the same price level as the Samsungs I think and I have a family member with one. I wanted to do something different.

I have the JVC 56FC97 and absolutely love it. HD looks fantastic on it whether from satellite, Xbox, or DVD.

I did a LOT of looking around at different brands of DLP, LCOS, and LCD before settling on the JVC.
