We've decided to finish our basement; it's ~1550 square feet and will have 2 bedrooms, family room, bathroom and a theater/bar room. We have an area that is ~24x16 with 8.5' ceilings that will be used as the theater/bar. Thus far I have completed the framing/electrical/plumbing (it won't really be completed until I hang drywall ). We will use the area for 50% TV watching 40% movies and 10% games.

I plan on doing 110 screen and have the seating at ~12-13'. Suggestions on this setup are appreciated.

I wired the space wired for 7.1, but haven't finalized the rear surround locations, other than they will have to be in ceilingjust left the wire really long for now. Is the following layout ok? Side surrounds at 90 degrees from seating position -

13' back from front of room and about 6.5' from the center of room

rear surrounds at 18' back and 4' from center of room.

I also have come to the point where I need a bit of advice. Currently I have a small closet beside the insert where I will build a small AV rack to house all the components. This is located right by the furnace and I am concerned that having an open back AV rack will allow too much noise through into the media room. So I was thinking of just making the whole thing a small closet and house all the electronics inside it. Thoughts?

It would be a good idea to totally wall it in with a rear or side access door to do wiring while standing in the furnace room. Can't tell from the pic the best way to do this.

Also should plan a silent bathroom exhaust fan to remove the hot air and you could dump it right in the furnace room.

Walling it in will aid in containing sound and keeping furnace noises out. You should not underestimate the later. I would be putting double layers of drywall on both sides of the common wall with a green glue sandwich. And of course insulation

It looks like you are new here and you should be reading the articles on soundroofingcompany.com.

It would help to see a rough sketch of how you plan to arrange seating and whatever else you are planning for this space to evaluate your screen size and speaker locations.

Thanks for the suggestions/ideas. I will definitely be putting in an exhaust fan dumping into the furnace room. I probably won’t be able to do the double rock on the inside of the furnace room, but insulation and double on the outside will be done.

I was thinking of speakercraft aim7.3 for the rear, but am open to other suggestions in the $125-150 per speaker range.

Here is a sketch of what I was thinking for speaker placement.

I do like that layout a lot....but I guess not enough to redo things. Unfortunately, the location of the wetbar is fixed as I have already plumbed/framed/wired it. Perhaps I could slide the seating and projector to the left side of the room. The problem with moving it to the other side is the rear wall length. To center the seating with the screen and leave some room on the left for a tower speaker, the couch would stick past the hallway entrance and look (in my mind at least) odd….I will have to measure when I get home.

I will post some decent pictures of the whole room Wednesday night...no lights until then because I unwired the light circuit for the electrical inspector who should inspect the space Wed.

If I do end up leaving the layout as is do you think the speaker locations (although less than ideal being in the ceiling) would be ok?

I chose the Speakercraft MDUs for my rear channels. I received them, but don't have them hooked up yet, so I can't provide a review. They are in the price range you are talking about and are not flush to the ceiling, so should provide improved direction for the sound. Just a thought, since you are already looking at Speakercraft.

No real updates, been insulating the other rooms in the basement so no new pics as of yet.

I have been considering doing the HVAC myself, but was curious how critical sizing everything is. I was just going to copy what was done in the rooms upstairs that where similar in size...as far as number of vents and size of runs/returns. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and a tip for quickly getting a pull string into a conduit....hook your shopvac to one end and take your string/nylon to the other end and suck the string through the conduit. If you are doing it by yourself sometimes it is easier to just use the shopvac to blow the string through the conduit...that way everything is done on one end.

Started on HVAC and am looking for some advice....how far do you typically place registers from the outside wall in a the basement? Additionally, is there a min. distance you should stay from the end of a supply duct for your takeoffs?

Finished the HVAC....finally. I placed the registers 30" from the walls and stayed 2 feet from the end of the supplies.

Time to start drywall...

I have a 3" conduit, hdmi, power and cat5e to my projector location and pre-wired for 7.1...anything i am missing?

I am planning on installing radiant in floor heat in the bathroom and tile over it. I was planning on putting down the wires, placing thinset, and then the tiles.

Do i need to install a crack isolation membrane? The basement floor hasn't cracked and is > 2 years old....

I still haven't decided how I want to do the equipment rack...leave it hidden in the utility room or cut a hole and have it open to the theater room....suggestions??

Another question...to save money on the basement trim package I am using round corners around the windows...except for the bottom, the bottom I am planning to transition to a solid wood piece. Suggestions on how to make the transition?

I am about to start painting my basement...what is recommended color for the ceiling of the theater? We are planning a brown for the walls in the theater room, but not sure about the ceiling color?

Most popular choice is flat black for the ceiling in order to minimize light reflections. Not sure if that is a good choice though with your brown walls - depends on what shade brown.
