How much do you want to pay for such a device? You can make something like this that will blow any CE device out of the water. You just described a "media PC." I would be happy to make and sell to you one. If you want a CE device that is going to do this, dont hold your breath. It wont be good and it wont integrate nicely.
Off the shelf? Wait about six months to a year and you'll be able to get one from HP.

You can buy a Velocity Micro machine right now and supplement it with an HD DVD drive you install yourself, but right now I don't know of a straight up solution that does both HD DVD and CableCard.
Don't exactly know how you want people to reply to this.

Such a beast doesn't exist, at least yet. HD-DVD drives aren't mainly available for the buying public. The best you could possibly do would be to buy a M$ HD-DVD add-on for the X-Box 360 and hook it up to your PC, but that does take a bit of doing.

No pre-made device like this exists. Your only hope is to either wait for somebody to eventually make one (but this will take some time) or you can pay somebody to make one for you.

You can get HD-DVD drives for the PC (as well as bluray), however the cable card is going to have to come from another device. They will be here soon enough or if you know the right people. Get a nice case, and DIY. YOU CAN DO IT!! **cajun man**

If you change "off the shelf" to "customize and order online" then this can happen today.

Chris
I have a solution for you.

Buy off-the-shelves parts and assemble HTPC for yourself.
You can buy my previous PC and put a psu, a video card and HD in. I will cut a deal for you since you are a member of AVS.

PM me if you want more details.
Note that if you really want a "digital cable tuner," buying a PC from HP or VM is really the only option. Building a PC is only going to get you unencrypted QAM support.

hmm, I have 3 PCs I am willing to part with as well.

I will make them "off-the-shelf" solution.

No tech support will be provided though

Huh. Did not know that. Is HP offering a CableCard solution on their website, then? Cool. I mean, not that I'd buy one, but I'm glad it's available for someone.
Yep. The m8010y can be currently configured with a single DCT for $1500 total.

Chris
For simple how about a DVR from you CATV or DISH provider, almost free, maybe $10 per month.

$600 for an HDDVD player

$600 for a very simple HTPC for meida and web stuff, maybe a mac mini if you like small and quiet.

$75 for an HDMI switcher

$150 for a good remote.

I you want complex, then try to make a PC do all that!

the reason Im focused on an off the shelf version is that i`ve built my own PC once, and Im tired of desktops. Tired of the noise, the maintenence and tweaking, even tired of the stress of upgrading. And when I think of using an HTPC in my living room, I think big and bulky to boot.

Thanks for all the responses... you`ve reaffirmed my suspicion that there aint nothin for me at the moment. Ill keep my eyes on HP. Im really impressed with this community and viewpoints.

I went to a friends house and checked out his apple iTV and it just wasnt a simple complete integrated solution. An expensive dell laptop might due the trick but I couldnt handle the price. I have the feeling that I really do have to wait a few months for HD-DVD to work its way, as a component, into a media device(like those from divco?). Thanks again for the help.
