Im using an older H/K AVR500 with some cheaper kenwood HTIAB speakers and i find alot of movies have a very low diolog or center channel track then all the sound effects are so loud i wind up turning the volume up and down.

Both of my receivers have a feature called "Night" mode wich is better as far as it tames the effects down so that everything is at a much more managable level but then it loses all the LFE and other sounds.

Ive tried the kenwood receiver that came with the speakers and even another matching set of cerwin vega CLS series and i still have issues with some diolog being so soft you cant really hear it and then 3-4 times the level when the effects kick in.

It's a common problem

Accoustics and speaker location is one possible issue

Maybe your center channel speaker is not the best, I could not say

You might be able to raise the center channel level so that it's louder (as mentioned above while I was in the middle of typing this)

I am not sure why you lose LFE or sounds in night mode. It would hopefully do nothing but compress the dynamic range, leaving everything intact, but making various sounds have a more similar average volume. Maybe it's just badly designed?

Hi BowerR64,

Have you calibrated speaker levels? If not check sticky on how to do this.If you have calibrated should be 75db all round with test disc ,then on some movies just bump up 1 to 2db on centre speaker or turn down left and right(note if you have more than plus 3db or 4dbs on any channel you need to reset levels so you are at max plus 2db for any channel to avoid clipping on that channel especially centre and subs).

regards Victor.

Well my mains are at 1-2 center is at 10 and rear is 1-2 sub is 0

everything sounds good when the effects kick in it sounds full and balanced. When they are not on it is so quiet you miss alot of dialogue.

I am planning new speakers but i had problems with another set as well.

I was watching valkerie today and my sister wanted me to turn it up she couldnt hear wha they were saying. Then when the explosions and stuff went off she screamed ITS TO LOUD!

Its a no win situation. But i agree i have a hard time hearing the dialogue myself

Hi,

When you say centre is 10 is that +10db and rest are +1 to +2 db etc?

If it is +10db way to loud must lower all levels -10db and then turn up master volume and let us know what that number is if centre is +10 that is roughly 10 times power of other speakers amp will clip and damage speaker for sure.If you can list other components too and all settings will be helpful.

The idea you only want speakers to be all BELOW +2db when set to ref 75db level and what level when watching valkerie is the master volume on your avr etc if very low,you may need to use dynamic compression mid, or night to have less dynamic range and therefore easier to hear soft and loud(makes differences smaller)movies have no compression so have large range 30db plus.

cheers Victor.

can you explain your room and the room treatments.

My family room is HUGE and I have always had a hard time with dialog.

The same speakers, same equipment in my HT room has incredible dialog. The room is smaller but its also has full acoustical treatments. I believe treatments improve the dialog more then anything else.

I recently watched that for the first time and that movie's dialog is unusually low, IMO. I think it was recorded that way as I don't usually have a problem with dialog. Anyway, I just cranked the whole thing up.
