I know this won't make me any more popular here, but doesn't anyone find this LT-150 thing funny? I mean, when I read these threads, I picture a group of middle-aged women in the 50's or 60's crowding around a department-store table full of white-sale items and screaming at the top of their lungs at the salesclerks who are cowering behind their cash registers. Funny stuff...

- Marc

p.s. I have one on order also, believe it or not. If it doesn't come, that will be just fine with me.

I totally agree Marc!

Or like the church rummage sales that used to be held when I was a kid. They may still have them now for all I know.

Clothes flying through the air...women screaming what a good deal they got when they find a great dress. Then looking for the moth holes in it.

Go with me to the garage sales and estate Sales on any given

Thursday (estates) or Saturday morning. You won't believe what you see! Sometimes you will see a crowd of 30 to 40 people pushed up against a garage door. When the door finally opens the way they rush in looks like someone drew a huge vacuum in the garage and they are all being

sucked in. You will see people from all walks of life trying to grab everything in sight. Most of the people you see are "regulars" who've been doing this every Saturday for years and years. Where I'm at one of the regulars who is out there every Saturday morning is the former President and CEO of the electric utility.

By the way, I'm usually the first one there. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

My wife and I used to hit the bankruptcy auctions and estate sales her in South Florida, too. We enjoy looking at our stash over the years.

In the late 80s and early nineties the comedy was watching all the idiot "end users" show up on Saturday auctions to buy themselves a home computer and bid them up to ridiculous amounts.

Never go to a saturday auction, advertised in the newspaper, unless you're an idiot.

Good post Marc.

I had visions of the "Attention K-Mart Shoppers..." scenario with AVS members walking the isles and then out of the loudspeaker we suddenly hear "...NEC LT-150 special, for the next 30 minutes only $1,700.00" after which a stampede quickly ensues. I see us all motoring down everything from 75 year old ladies in housewares to the tiny totts in the toy department.

Boy do we get mobilized when faced with a bargain.

How many people bought one who could care less?

Last year at a yard sale I spotted a Ziploc bag on a table with the word "Leica" and "$8" written on it with a magic marker. It was Saturday and a posted sign said "everything 1/2 price on Saturday" (the sale opened Friday). I picked up the bag and when I looked inside I just about wet myself. It was a cherry Leica M2 with a lens on the body and two extra lenses. When I regained my composure I took it to the guy and said calmly "this is $4 right?". I'll never forget what he then said. He says "Yep - used to be everybody wanted one of these Likurs". I gave him the four bucks and as I was walking away I wanted to turn around and tell him the "used to be" part was slightly in error. But didn't. Sold it a week later for $1600. I don't to this day understand why someone did not buy it on Friday.

I didn't imply I'm not one who digs at garage sales and didn't have a LT 150 on order!

I play the same game.

Hell I only bought a 150 'CAUSE it was cheap, good, and if I hated it I wouldn't take a bath reselling it.

(/me stands on the sultans side of the room trying to get tips. Damn this isn't IRC)

First rule, Larry, is that we don't admit to being "garage sale diggers". We are "Urban Archaelogists".

I will admit, however, that one of the people who runs in my crowd is somewhat of a "dumpster diver" though. Here's one for you. A couple of months ago he discovered a bunch of new music CD's in the dumpster behind a local Post Office warehouse. Turns out they are throwing CD's in there that people have refused to take delivery of (something about unsolicited promotions where they mail out CD's to get you hooked on a CD buying club). He now goes every Sunday and fishes out a box of new CD's. Here's the fun part. Directly across the street from this Post Office is a used CD store (I kid you not - directly on the other side of the street). He removes all the markings (so he doesn't give himself away) and then walks across the street and sells em to the used CD guy.

He also discovered that a chain shoe store throws boxes of brand new shoes in their dumpster periodically (stale merchandise). Every so often he goes and gets a truckload of new in the box shoes out of that dumpster. Now has an outlet for those too. I marvel at his ability to turn nothing into something.

It's disappointing those shoes don't end up at the Good Will or Salvation Army.

Certainly the shoe store would do better donating them to a charity, than throwing them away.

LOL Bob

Listen, I come from a long line of cheapskates. Second generation of "children of the depression". Pack rat, the whole thing.

I flew out to spend the weekend with my brother in Apex, NC a month or so ago. Got there on friday nite, remember I haven't spent really any time with him in over 10 years.... 7 am I was expected to go garage saleing with him.

I went of course.

Almost bought a chipper actually but the shipping costs scared me. Shoulda probably done it now that I think of it. It WAS a deal.

Where's my beer?

Any way, most of the time, things around here remind me of the apes gesturing wildly at each other over the pond in '2001: A Space Odessey'. Then, one hits the other leader.. and they all follow.. getting their shots in, one after another.... Me too! me too!

I better shut up about this, Larry, because other than you and me I doubt if anyone's interested since it doesn't have any relevance to home theater.

One last question though. Why do folks make their yard sale signs the size of postcards and written with a ballpoint?

I waste more valuable time having to continually get of my

truck to read those signs. There ought to be a local ordinance stating that yard sale signs have to be poster board sized and written with felt tip pens.

When you go back to visit your brother make a side trip here to the Florida panhandle and we'll hit the sales together some Saturday.

That's it for me tonight. I finally just finished working for today. Now I have to start looking at the ads for tomorrow morning's sales.

p.s. Always remember 8AM means 6AM. 8AM "No Early Birds" means 7. 8AM "Absolutely no early birds" means 7:30. And

8AM "Early birds pay double" means 8AM.

You guys laugh, but I was at a garage sale and picked up a 3500 lumens DILA that was self caliberating and adjusted aspect ratio as the input called for and got it for $28.50 because it didn't fit in the guys garage. He threw in two Radio shack cables that I sold on ebay for $12.50. Total outlay $16.00(plus $1500 for a Grayhawk)

Must have been an ILA, not DILA, 335. Great buy if you have a booth behind your HT room with a separation glass.

Otherwise the noise and heat will be unbearable.

Also, first 335s had only a 200:1 contrast ratio, while the latest ones had 1200:1. I hope you got a recent one!
