I'm torn... Athena Point 5 or Polk Setup...

814 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  edster922
I am currently waiting to receive two sets of speakers... I ordered the Athena Point 5 on onecall for $200. Before that, I had already ordered 2 pairs of Polk R15's and a Polk center channel - Csi25. I plan on combining these speakers with a Dayton 10" sub and either a Panasonic xr55 or a Pioneer VSX816. Which of the two speaker sets should I be leaning towards for a richer sound (Care more for SQ considering this would be for my 12' X 10' room). Any input would be greatly appreciated!

You did the right thing by ordering both sets. Now you can compare them both and see what YOU like best. I'd say they are pretty comparable as far as SQ is concerned. They both have different characteristics though. One is brighter sounding and the other is more laid back/warm sounding.
i don't understand why you're asking this question if you've ordered both. keep whichever set sounds best to you.

they'll probably sound a little different, and their repsective sounds will please different people. who cares what a bunch of strangers think if you're not happy with them? you made the right move.
I believe the Polks have 5 1/4 woofers, the Athenas have 4' woofers. The Polks will sound fuller the Athenas will have a more pronounced midrange & highs/treble.

You know that's putting it blunt and most people dont like bluntness but thats the truth. We're all strangers to you and you ordered both sets so I dont understand why you're asking us if you already ordered them.
In my opinoin (but you know what they say about opinoin) I've never listened to Athena but regardless of what people say I love Polk speakers. I'm currently putting together a Polk Monitor series and love everything about them. The different series I hear the more I like Polk in general. But like I said that's just my opinoin you may think Polk sounds terrible it's all about what you listen to and what your ears like. Nobody can tell you what YOU will like only you can.
I wasn't precise enough in my question... I have both sets of speakers ordered (Polk's on friday and Athena's today) but yet to be shipped. Therefore I wanted to know which one would sound better to maybe cancel my other order. I prefer just having one shipped so that I won't have to pay return shipping on one of the setups. I suppose I might just receive both and do like you all said, listen and pick. Thanks for your help everyone.

Additionally, is the Athena Point 5 system far superior to the Micra 6 setup?

IMO, you're much better off with the .5s and the Dayton 10" than the Micras. Don't have an opinion on the Polks.

actually your choice of speakers really hinges on your choice of receivers.

With the Panny digitals, the warmth of the Polks would be a safer bet.

With the Pio 816, I would get the Athena Point 5s or better yet the Athena B1.2s for a little extra cash.

I agree with the Panasonic and Pioneer (even Elite) isn't getting the best of reviews.
Guys, what do my onkyo receiver sound signature fall into? warm or bright? sorry for hijacking.

Ahhhh nvm, a google brought me back to avs and saying that Onkyo receivers has a brighter sound. So I guess since I have some Polk's R30's and thier warmness= nicely balanced sound :) Maybe I should forget about the Athena B2.2's I was thinking about... bu I do like a nice and bright sound..... hmmmmm

anyone who says Onkyos are "bright" have obviously mismatched them with speakers that they cannot adequately power and therefore are hearing "thin" as a classic result of underpowering which they are confusing with "bright." Onkyo like Sony often inflates their receivers' RMS numbers:

(Note the flagship Onkyo 901's numbers.)

Onkyos are "warm"---kind of dead and hollow-sounding for music to my ears, but ok for HT, and that's why I'd use Athenas with them. This was my experience with an Onkyo 601 running a very small pair of Mordaunt Short 8 ohm bookshelves which are usually classified as neutral to bright. My guess is, the Polk R15s which already have a lackluster 3/4" tweeter would sound buried alive with an entry-level Onkyo 503.
