iMac to Philips LCD?

1015 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bluenotedesigns
So I just purchased a new Philips 37" LCD with ambilite 2 and Pixel Plus 2 HD.

I already have an Intel Imac Core Duo setup.

I am moving on Friday and Saturday to set-up most of the items above with the delivery people (philips and fortress)

I currently have a mini-DVI to S-Video converter and a long s-video cable which works like a charm with my CRT TV. But I am told that s-video to LCD will cause bad color and problems....so:

1. How do I connect my iMac to the LCD TV? What do I need to purchase?

2. The TV will be on opposite side of room from computer, so cord will need to be about 20 feet long. What cord will work for this length?

3. Anyone in HK know where to buy this stuff?

no suggestions?

no other users connected an intel imac to a LCD HDMI TV?
so my understanding is that I need to buy:

a. the Apple mini-DVI to DVI(-D?) converter

b. a heavy duty DVI (-D?) - HDMI cable that has one type on each side of plug. (monster website has one i saw...but is pricey)

c. a 3.5mm audio splitter

d. a long red/white composite audio cord

is that all? does anyone know of any complications with this setup? is this going to work?

thanks for all the wonderful and helpful comments...it really paid off...cause now i got it working
sorry i didnt see your post in time, you were right with everything you needed (im assuming so, i dont have a mac though). I do have one question for you. How is the screen fitting on your Philips LCD TV? Ive got the 37PF7320A, not sure if thats the same one you have, but the screen does not seem to fit at all and I cant figure out the resolution timing. Your the only other person on here, it seems, thats using a philips LCD.
well, glad to see you made it bluenoted. Imagine that I had not realized of the existance of this forum in all these years ! and I only use Macs.

Anyhow, I was wondering exactly the same thing. I don't even know what ports my iMac has, and I wanted to do just that, send the output to my plasma screen.

I could do this w/o any issue with my PM G4, which had a DVI output. So I went to the Apple's site and discover that the iMac has a "mini-DVI".

Ok, so all we need is a mini-DVI --> DVI connector and we are set ?
by the way, lets not forget that Apple will be releasing that box, I believe in January, that allows video to be transmitted wirelessly to our tv's....may be worth the wait before spending money on a long, quality, DVI cable !

you dont need to spend $300 for a good DVI cable.

just need to get a mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
yes, I agree, certainly not $300. Still, I am probably going to need a 50 feet cable !

I do wonder however whether the monoprice cables are good enough, I just don't know, but I will probably give it a try.
yes...i have the recent 37" Philips LCD TV with PixilPlus 2HD, aand Ambilight 2 Channel.

Its very good, but sadly i wish i sprung for the newer model with 3 channel ambiight and latest clear pixel and pixel plus 3

anyways....i used the apple mini-DVI to DVI connector and a DVI-HDMI cable, then i hooked up my audio channels to the sound box.

everything works great, however i have not had good success to fill the screen. If i use the "overscan" feature of OSX, it zooms in too much. I downloaded SwitchResX, but have not had time to see how to use it.

i cant wait for the iTV, or some other wireless device so that i can put my imac in the bedroom, and still use the LCD TV in the living room.

what would be really nice is if the iTV could backwards transmit....meaning that you can also have the cable tv channels (hooked up to the LCD TV) be transmitted to the iTV and then to the imac in other room....this way you can be in bedroom and watch cable TV on your mac via the iTV setup.
