I want to buy a flat screen TV that can take an HDTV and DirecTV signal as well as a progressive DVD signal.

It is impossible to compare them. The magazines never find the same two as "editor's choice" and the forums--while offering opinions--are mostly based on OWNER'S reviews which will (likely) be for the brand they own. It's human nature--buyer's acceptance vs buyer's remorse! In fact, many of the best online reviews seem to have been written around Aug/Sept of 2002! I know that the technology must have changed in the last year.

I'm looking at something around the 40-42" level. I can't even tell you the benefits of LCD vs Plasma. I'm confused.

Can someone please help me!

I'm not sure why you say it is "Impossible" to compare them, and then quote magazine reviews and forum members opinions as a limited resource. Obviously, the best comparison is your own eyes. RHarkness did extensive comparisons (for example) for over a year prior to purchasing his plasma, perhaps a search on some of his techniques and evaluations my help when you go shopping.

Have you read all of these: (Pete Putman reports)

If you are looking for in depth remarks on the very latest 'just released' models, those are starting to trickle in. But still many are not able to give direct generation to generation differences, do to lack of side by side comparisons. As last years models are phased out for new ones, seems to me, it is less likely someone would have a choice between them. It would be more important to compare new models from various manufacturers offerings, and decide which fits your needs and pocket book.

There have been posts about what some of the new models are claiming to offer in terms of technology improvements, but one has to sort the 'marketing' from the 'real'.
