Film Synopsis:

In a World is a romantic comedy about a struggling vocal coach who strikes it big in the cutthroat world of movie-trailer voiceovers, only to find herself in direct competition with the industry's reigning king-her father.

My Take:

In this oddly offbeat and idiosyncratic comedy, Carol (Lake Bell) is an underachieving voice coach living in the shadow of her egotistical father Sam (Fred Melamed), the undisputed king of the voice-over industry. When Sam kicks her out, Carol lands her first voice-over job with the help of charming sound engineer Louis (Demetri Martin). As romantic sparks begin to fly, Carol finds herself facing a momentous decision when continued job offers put her in head to head competition with her dad.

Written & directed by star Lake Bell In a world is a quirky and spirited comedy that floats themes of familial dysfunction, sexism, self empowerment, and light romance surrounding the subject of movie-trailer voiceovers. Perfectly pitched via wisecracking subtexts and off center humor this is a light, fun and entertaining film that succeeds at endearing us to its protagonist, a complicated and lovably flawed woman. The satire and family commentary is biting yet refreshingly portrayed so as not to invoke a preachy stance.

Bells performance is charmingly spot on and acts as the foundation of film’s well drawn characters and characterizations which are purposefully overt and at times funny bone tickling. The supporting cast includes Rob Corddry, Michaela Watkins and Ken Marino with cameos by Eva Longoria and Geena Davis.

In a world is a smart, funny and endearingly relevant comedy that I found to be 90 minutes well spent.

In a world comes to Blu-ray Disc from Sony Pictures HE featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 29 Mbps and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound that has an average bitrate of 2.1 Mbps.

This is a solid high definition presentation that seems a perfect match for the source material. Colors are naturally rendered with eye pleasing vitality and warm accents. Fleshtones err on the side of pale but remain lifelike in depiction. Images are resolute, with stable sharpness, crisp detail and appreciable subtle refinement. Certain scenes appeared better resolved than others although this appears related to the photography and not the encoding. Contrast is stable and blacks are rich in depth with discernible detail in low lighting and shadows. I didn’t see any distracting signs of video related artifacts and thought that in general video quality was top notch.

Being a dialogue driven film the ability to clearly render that aspect is an important elements of the soundtrack. This DTS-HD Master Audio presentation had no problem in that regard. Voices were reproduced with transparent realism and lucid texture that appropriately held sway over the front soundstage. The surround mix made apropos use of the sound platform to render the films elements. I found it to be subtly engaging as it recreated the many acoustic sounds associated with the environments portrayed onscreen. The soundstage offered a nicely balanced mixture of ambience/background sounds and music that characterized the mood of the scene. There weren’t any sub bass frequencies contained in the mix however the subwoofer was used to provide low bass emphasis where appropriate.

Bonus Features:

  • (HD) Gag reel – 4 minutes

  • (HD) 9 deleted scenes

  • Commentary with writer/director Lake Bell

  • (HD) “In a world” promo trailers

Final Thoughts:

Written & directed by star Lake Bell In a world is a quirky and spirited comedy that floats themes of familial dysfunction, sexism, self empowerment, and light romance surrounding the subject of movie-trailer voiceovers. I found it to be smart, endearingly relevant and a great way to spend 90 minutes when in the mood for something a little off the beaten path. In a world comes to Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment featuring solid technical merits and a light supplemental package that is highlight by Lake Bell’s audio commentary. Toss this one in your rental queue and give it a spin on Blu-ray.
