Everyone,

I have been juggling the idea of mixing my speaker brands. I am using Focal 700 series for the front, center and sub, but am not sure their in ceiling speakers would do the job. Someone told me I should use an in ceiling speaker that can be directed at the primary audience. Therefore, it looks like I will need a different brand speaker to achieve this. Does anyone have a recommendation? I do not want to spend more than $1500 for the pair.

Thanks all!

You are looking to use in-ceiling speakers for the fronts? Or rears? Or...?

Hello ifor,

I would be using the in-ceiling speakers for surround in directly behind and to the side of the primary viewing position (see attached floor plan)

Is there a room above? If you are happy with the Focal Chorus line, I am inclined to tell you to stick with their in-ceiling model. That said, they are not an enclosed speaker and they have an open baffle design. If there is a bedroom or other living area above this space you will get bleed through from the speakers without an enclosure and some insulation in your ceiling. If you do have living space above, there are some enclosed speaker options out there in your price range that will work. Likewise, I would check to see if Focal sells an enclosure for the speaker you referenced above. Some audio companies sell a separate enclosure for their open baffle models.

Spread them a further out and back a couple of feet in both directions and you will be more than fine with the Focal in-ceiling speakers.

No need for directional's when using them as rears.

*note: If you're worried about the open back, look at the Dynabox from Dynamat.
