In-Ceiling Surround Placement in 7.1 System

I hope that I have not overlooked a similar thread.

I have a friend who has ordered 4 Klipsch 5800-C in-ceiling speakers for use as surrounds in a 7.1 system. (The 5800s are their newest architectural speakers, details not yet on the Klipsch website)

The in-ceilings are necessary because it's a long, narrow room, which makes in-wall or on-wall speakers pretty goofy looking in a non-dedicated room.

Where would you place the speakers in relation to the seating position? Would you bounce the side surrounds off the side walls or direct them towards the sweet spot? Would you wire them in phase?

Thanks in advance.

Why is that? Most good HT rooms are longer than they are wide.

As long as the ceiling is 8-ft. or more high, I would put them a few feet behind the primary viewing seat. If there are any aiming capabilities, aim them at the seat.

Without changing the seating arrangement (WAF) you would have to duck to walk under the side surrounds. In-walls would be possible, but would require more drywall work that what I am willing to sign up for, and would be difficult to match to the decorative wall painting that they paid a lot of money for.

Thanks for the advice!
Forgot to mention, the side speakers: a few feet to the sides and front of the seat, again aiming them towards the seat.
Why place the side surrounds in front of the listening position?

That seems rather counter-intuitive.
Duster,

Location recommendations vary from expert to expert. I think you should go to the Dolby website and look at speaker placement for Pro Logic IIx (7.1 set-up). If you really are doing a 7.1 with rears, do not place the surrounds in front of the listening position. Get speakers with pivoting tweeters so you will have some flexibility to adjust how things sound. I have heard a theater with all in-ceiling speakers (including fronts),and while it is a compromise, it certainly can work.
