In store listening test

284 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  vivid
I was going to run up to HIFI Buys and take a listen to some of their speakers and I was thinking about take my speakers (Mission 753) up there too so I could compare them.

Would it be a fair comparison if I only took one of my speakers there and just compare one of my speakers to one of the stores by changing the balance to just one side then using the stores built in switch to change between the speakers?

Fair. No. If you are listening to a stereo source this test will be flawwed.
Actually, some pro reviewers, like Art Dudley, prefer testing speakers with a mono source. The logic is that without the phase and signal differences of two channels, a speaker's flaws and strengths will be more obvious.

However, if you are going to do this, you should try to get a mono source for listening, like an older CD or LP. Also, you should try to do the comparison on electronics that offer a mono mode. Some better integrated amps and preamps have a mono mode option, but most do not.

FWIW, I like Mission speakers, and frankly, I'd be surprised if you prefer anything at Hifi Buys, other than the Sonus Faber speakers, to your 753s. Could be a lot of fun, though.
Thanks guys, I spoke with John at Mission USA earlier today and he said that the 753s are a superior speaker even being 10 years old and that technology has not made significant improvements to warrant a change in speakers. He said that although the Mission 78s were slightly better they were not that much of an improvement over the 75s and the trade would not be worth the money. He did say that Mission has a new line coming out early/mid next year and that they should be incredible I guess we will wait and see.
