in typical ABC fashion, Toy Story "HD" looks no better(maybe worse) than DVD

I just got done doing an A/B comparison of Toy Story on ABC and the DVD... they looked similar but the one on ABC had over saturated colors. i'll stick with the DVD.

I'd have to disagree. I did the same a/b test with a dvd/iScan combo. Both inputs were isf calibrated. I prefer the HD. It's not a huge difference, but noticeable. The HD is a tiny, tiny bit softer but lots of detail and I think the colors are just fine. No chroma bug in HD. Audio coming through in 5.1. I just hate the commercials.
I'm not set up for an a/b comparison, but I've seen Toy Story on plenty of other sets (DVD), and I am blown away once again by the HD presentation of Toy Story. I don't really see how the resolution could get any better. If the color is off, I don't see it. I wish I had some non HD believer friends over right now.
i've had my dvd and hd inputs both ISF calibrated. maybe the mits stb does not upconvert 720p to 1080i as well as your reciever or maybe my DVD player is setup differently and i get more out it.
Hey ADebar,

Your set and/or STB must be broken. I watch Toy-Story on ABC tonight and it was almost 3-D. Our local ABC station here in the Triangle is doing a great job with HDTV presentation. Good Job channel 11 WTVD! There is absolutely nothing wrong with the 720p to 1080i upconversion of the Mits HD-5 STB.
I agree that tonight's ABC-HD Toy Story had picture quality that was far beyond DVD. The subtleties in the gas station sequence alone were mind-blowing. The detail, shading and colors in the car upholstery; the landscape nuances in the night sky....quite amazing. My local ABC-HD does not pass 5.1 (2.0 AC3 only), but the pq was passed along quite nicely, thank you. No comparison to a dvd that is no slouch in its own right.
I agree my DVD looks a lot sharper than ABCs HD presentation. Im using the RCA DTC 100 ota here in southern california and I also have a progresive scan Toshiba 6200 dvd. My Mitsubishi RP tv isnt ISF calibrated but I did use the Avia dvd.
I haven't had time to do a side-by-side comparison, but to me the PQ was outstanding on my Mits 65 rptv. I did notice that the sound was a little weird for the first 5 minutes or so. There was no sound from the center channel, and my MC1 was displaying 2.0 Prologic. Then after about 5 minutes, the sound went to full 5.1 and it was great. I recorded the show with my Hipix, and hope to do some scene by scene comparisons soon. I'll post some screen shots if anyone is interested.
I thought the PQ of Toy Story was great in HD . I don't understand how some people are saying that the DVD's PQ was better. I'm not saying that on their system at that time it wasn't but this seems strange to me. I don"t know what the explanation is.
I thought the PQ was better than dvd. Here in Detroit the OTA broadcast didn't have 5.1, just dolby pro-logic :(. I haven't watched much HD since I've only had my setup for a little over a week. My next step will be an ISF calibration. I didn't know it would have to be done for each input. I just need to find someone good in the Detroit area.

I've seen the Toy Story dvd hundreds of times, and I've got to agree that the HD presentation on ABC last night was only mildly better. The picture was softer, color saturation a little higher.

I assume they used the original film stock to create the HD transfer, rather than the original digital composite. Perhaps that's some of the difference. I also wonder if those people that claim to see a huge improvement over the disc are watching the presentation in native 720p. My STB has to convert to 1080i for ABC. I thought The Emperor's New Groove a few weeks back was fantastic, and looked better than TS.

I for one would love to see some screenshots side by side. Do you have a website you post those to??

Hope I don't sound dumb on this one, but, what is Hipix?

thanks,

Tim

I vote for the DVD on this one. I started watching it on ABC and then put in the DVD, compared them and stuck with the DVD.

My equipment:

Tosh. Progressive 6200

Mitsu 65907 (ISF calibrated)

DTC-100

This again seems to be a situation where people are making comments who do not have equipment capable of showing native 720p.

Watching this in 720p natively, it was absolutely stunning and thd DVD is complete garbage when compared to this broadcast.

Since ABC is the only one using 720p, it would be better if they jumped on the boat and went to 1080i. I'm not going to go out and drop a couple grand on a new tv that does 720p for just one channel with limited HD.
I noticed some problems on the commericals from the national feed last night...

Just wanted to see if anyone else saw this problem or not...maybe it was just me...

Thanks.

Brian
If you're talking about the flickering horizontal green lines, yes, I saw them, too. ABC knows this is a problem, from what the local engineering director tells me.

At least they seem to have gotten the lipsync problem resolved. And if those green lines only show up during commercials, I'm not gonna complain. ;)
with the college football disaster from CBS and now this astrocity from ABC, HD might be taking strides in the wrong direction. HD might be tailing off. i hope the entire HD industry does not fail, but from the looks of these two shows you never know. I hope ABC and CBS are still supporting HD.
I watched "Toy Story" on a Fujitsu PDS-5002 on Saturday night 10/27, with and without a Faroudja Native Rate Scalar set to 1280x768 pixels.

Watched a good deal of "Toy Story" on Sunday night 10/28 from WPVI-64 at native 720p. The HD version was noticeably crisper and smoother than the DVD from a Sony DVP-S7000, and still better than the Faroudja's 1280x768 output.

Since the Fujitsu panel maps 1366x768 pixels, it is almost doing a 1:1 match with 720p source material. "Alias" which followed was equally spectacular, and in fact looked better than "Max Bickford" on KYW-26.

Don't expect too much from RPTVs using 7" tubes. None of them look sharp enough to suit my tastes with any HD content.

The receiver used was a Panasonic TU-HDS20, Mfg. date September 2001, set to "native" output.
