I prefer to get great quality with moderate but not crazy jack. I have started my theater with a Pioneer KRP-600M 60" plasma and Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player. Now I need speakers and a receiver for rock music and occasional movies (Onkyo TX-SR876 may get too hot, so I'll look at Denon and Yamaha before deciding).

I am trying to avoid towers, because I want to maintain the clean look of a 60" plasma on the front wall, and I would prefer not have speakers sticking out from every wall in a 5.1 or 7.1 setup.

I would like to build around one of these subs:
  1. Seaton SubMersive, $2295, box, dual 15" sealed, 1000W, 24"W x 18"D x 26"H, perhaps the best, a sub for life
  2. SVS PC13-Ultra, $1399, cylinder, 13" cone, 750W, 46"H x 16"Dia, superior sound but tall
  3. SVS PB13-Ultra, $1399, box, 13" cone, 750W, 21"W x 27"D x 22"H, do I really want this thing out in the room 27" plus room to breathe behind it?
  4. AV123 MFW-15, $699, box, 15", 350W, 18"W x 22"D x 24"H, sound supposedly on par with PC13-Ultra, quite a bargain
  5. SVS PC12-NSD, $569, cylinder, 12" cone, 325W, 35"H x 16"Dia, shorter than PC13-Ultra, some buyers get a taste and upgrade to the Plus or Ultra

Would any of these in-walls do music and movies justice with those subs?:
  • LSA in-wall speaker . The LSA1IW uses the same mid-bass driver as the LSA1 monitors, which I have heard good reviews on.
  • BG Radia was said to make a good in-wall product in another thread.
  • Martin Logan also makes some in-walls, but I was not overly impressed with one of their towers I heard a couple years back at a high-end boutique. I have doubts whether I would prefer them to a cone speaker.

Would any of the above or another contender go good with one of these subs, or can an in-wall not do music and movies true justice.

Well, I don't know how you arrived at that particular list of 3 brands, but the speakers you list range from $350 per speaker (the lsa) to over $3,000 (the larger bg radia and the higher end martin logans) - that is quite a range and basically includes almost all inwall speakers that are on the market.

You are leaving out many very well regarded inwall brands, including Triad, Polk LC series and Klipsch thx inwalls

How big is your room? Carpeted? Wood floor? Concrete?

Also, I would consider looking at dual mfw15 or PC12-NSD sub options for the same price as some of your other sub choices - greater output if colocated or smoother even inroom response if you spread them out.

I have a 13'W x 16'D x 8'H 2nd floor room with painted drywall and carpeted floor. The room is square with only a closeable door on a perpendicular wall next to the monitor.

Of your list I have heard a BG set up (can't recall which model) and it was pretty darn good, but a touch high $ for what I was looking for. I'd throw out two others, Aperion makes some good inwalls that are fairly easy on the wallet, and I will second the recommendation on Triad as the best inwalls I have personally heard.

As or the sub, I am an Ultra fan (ordering my second within the next month). That said pay attention to the specs of the speakers and the upper bass capabilities on whichever sub as the inwalls will be a little bass shy compared to a similar boxed enclosure. No big deal as all the subs listed are very good.

If it were my money I would find a Triad /Svs PB13-U or Seaton Submersive set up that was within my budget and call it a day. Much better plan than the soundbar.

OP, I have some NHT in walls (IW4's and IW3's) that I am happy with, especially at the price point I paid with the foam inserts ($900 + tax). These speakers do very well with my Epik Dynasty.

If you budget allows you might also want to take a look at the Paradigm in walls as well.

Hi KRP,

There are now some serious in-wall speakers available out there. Triad's IW-Gold LCRs would top my list, with Paradigm, Revel, Snell, PSB & SpeakerCraft on the list as well.

I would also suggest you double check your price list above for the subwoofers as a few numbers look high or low depending on what versions and finishes you had in mind (ie SubMersive, PB13-Ultra, MFW-15).

Whatever you choose, make sure you pick inwalls with integrated enclosures or build your own enclosures in the walls. My room is only a tiny bigger than yours (17 x 13 x 8) and I am planning on inwalls also - klipsch kl7800 thx and ks-7800 thx, but this is for movies only, no music.
