Increasing network strength to WMC Extender

304 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  jmuskibum
Recently built my HTPC with Homerun Prime and my Xbox is not getting a strong/consistent enough signal to stream PVR content or HD movies I am looking for help/recommendations considering the following facts:

  1. I have Verizon FiOs 50/25 plan
  2. Verizon router is in family room, but connected to ASUS RT-n66u router for wireless broadcast
  3. Primary TV is running off an HTPC in family room where it is connected to HD Homerun Prime.
  4. For now, have 1 xbox extender in basement, but would like to add 1-2 more on different floors in future.
  5. Xbox is only 15 feet from where FiOS ONT is and where cable line comes into house
  6. Distance between Verizon router and xbox is about 55 feet plus going down one level.

I don't foresee being able to run cable Ethernet across the house, so looking at other networking options, but frankly don't know which is better.

Was exploring:
  • MOCA - not sure what pros/cons of this are
  • 2nd ASUS router in bridge mode - not sure if signal loss is worth it
  • 2nd Verizon Router with direct connect to WMC (not sure you can do this)

Read a bunch of posts on the forum, but think I would appreciate input for my particular case.

Since you are talking several floors I'd go with Powerline. Its pricing has come down quite a bit and more than likely it would simply work...

and powerline you mean Moca correct? I believe they are same, but wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something.

Any recommendations on which powerline product?

Powerline uses your electrical wiring and MoCA uses coax. Obviously Powerline is usually more flexible and MoCA at times offers better performance. Extenders don't require a lot of bandwidth so it's more expense and ease of installation. Brand wise I can't help... some devices offer more than one port which can come in handy at times.
