Indy 500 in HD?

1578 Views 30 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  krs7272
Did a quick search, and I didn't see any posts on this....Is the Indy 500 going to be in HD this year??

The reason I ask is that I just came back from Indy, and on my way to the airport ran into a huge RCA billboard reading....Inianapolis, HDTV USA. On the side of the billboard was a picture of the RCA bigscreen showing an Indy Car. What are the chances the race from HDTV USA is gong to be in HD?

It would be nice but it is unlikely. Maybe Marc will rescue us.
My opinion: Chances: nill and none!! My wishes: Damn that would sound great in 5.1!!
I think this is ABC no?

Considering the speeds, 720p would be better suited for it. They've got the event and the technology, why not give it a go?

Or, how about just do the pits in HD?
I hope for those of you that will be watching the Great American Race on tv that its in HD as for me you cant beat the experiance of being there in person.

Chris
That Billboard that you saw, on the way into the airport probably, has been up for around 2 years. They will periodically change the picture on the screen -- but there is not relationship between what ends up on the billboard and what ends up in HDTV. Remember that TCE (thomson consumer electronics) is the wonderful sponsor that brought us the superbowl this year.

Don't get me wrong....I think the Indy 500 in HD would be wonderful -- but it would probably be wishful thinking. I'm sure it would blacked out for me anyway...

Mak.
RCA's parent Thomson Electronics has there U.S. Headquarters in Indianapolis and builds most of there HD sets there.

You're kidding, right? They don't actually blackout the race locally... do they?
Hey Mak,

I might have an extra ticket if you've got some (alot) of extra beer.

Chris
Man E, they actually do black the race out in Indy...
OK, sorry to go farther OT, but when they pull an NFL like this and hold the gun to their fans' heads, do they sell out? Were they not selling out in the past? How many is a sell out? Is the black out lifted when there is a sell out?

Thanks.
No, the blackout is not lifted when it sells out. Correct me if I'm wrong, fellow Indiana residents, but I think the race sells out every year -- in advance. If i'm in town, and I don't go to the race, the soonest it will be on is in the evening on the day of the race. When I was a kid my family used to spend memorial day weekend at a cabin in Southern Indiana. We could watch it from the Louisville stations live. I'm not sure how far the blackout extends, but the central 1/3rd of Indiana is covered.

krs7272 -- thanks for the offer. The beer wouldn't a problem but I've got other plans.

ronbaker -- I'm not sure if your post was in reference to mine. My father has worked for RCA (thomson) for over 30 years (no that's not a typo). He builds prototype boards -- one of the few remaining solder jockeys!

Mane -- I think the Brickyard holds about 1/4 a million people.

Thanks for the clarification. Nothing like knowing that the pr*cks will pull the trigger no matter what their "valued" customers do.

...and now we return you to our pleading to someone - anyone - to please carry the race in HD...
Yes, the Indy 500 is blacked out every year in Indy itself, even though the race always sells out a year ahead of time. It is broadcast that night in Indy.

But then again who really cares since Tony (Satan) George has ruined what once was the greatest sporting event in the world. Let's hope the CART drivers can kick the Indy Replacement League's butt like they have done the last 2 years.

John,

As a fellow hater of what Tony George has done to the sport of open wheel I cant agree more. Go Team Penske!!!!

Team Penske is an IRL team now so I respectfully hope none of his drivers even finish. I hope the CART drivers can sweap again this year. It would truly be awesome if they take the top six places again.
Let's go Team Green. Let's kick some amateur short-tracker butt!
I don't think the true race fans in Indy have a problem with blackout, because they are at the race. They get a bonus when they get home when they get to see the race again.

count me in to root for andretti. let's kick some amateur oval only racers butts.

cart may be dominated by mostly foreign drivers, but no names "billy bob" (or has been) racers have yet to match them in wits, breaking, or speed. has it gotten so bad that tony had to create a series for these racers?

additionally, i can't help but think the F1 guys sneaker at tony's IRL leauge when they come to indy for the american gp.

too bad indy isn't televised in hd. of course that would mean progressive thinking, which is might be out of the hollman family since tony took indy over.

only true racing can improve the breed. (this includes braking and turning left AND right)

Have some cheese with that wine. ;)

Personally I think the IRL has done well for itself and having CART and the IRL meet once a year at the Superbowl of motorsports is exciting.
